Larkspur, mittlerer Westen, USA, 1990 : Auf einer Autofahrt werden die gespannten Beziehungen in der Familie des Literaturprofessors Willem Dafoe (Charles Taylor) zu seinem Sohn Cayden Boyd (Michael Taylor als Junge) und zu seiner Frau Julia Roberts (Lisa Taylor) deutlich. 2007. Zu einem Familientreffen reist Ryan Reynolds (Michael Taylor), mittlerweile Buchautor, aus New York an. Kurz vor seinem Eintreffen wird Roberts durch einen Autounfall mit Dafoe am Steuer getötet. Auf der Trauerfeier versöhnt sich Reynolds mit Carrie-Ann Moss (Kelly Hanson), seiner von ihm getrennten Frau, streitet aber mit Dafoe weiter. Er hat ein enthüllendes autobiographisches Buch geschrieben, « Fireflies in the Garden », das kurz vor der Veröffentlichung steht. Er erinnert sich – in Rückblenden – und findet heraus, daß Roberts sich von  Dafoe scheiden lassen wollte. Doch die Flucht von Dafoes Enkelsohn Chase Ellison (Christopher), der sich für den Tod von Roberts verantwortlich glaubt und andere Ereignisse lassen ihn auf die Publikation des Buches verzichten und führen zur Versöhnung mit dem Vater.

Das Gedicht von den Sternen des Himmels und den Glühwürmchen, die sie auf der Erde nachäffen, von Robert Frost 1928 veröffentlicht, gab diesem Film seinen Titel. Und er ist selbst ein Glühwürmchen : optisch schön, in vielen Momenten faszinierend, in seiner Gesamtheit aber ohne Belang. In seinen familiären Beziehungen zu Beginn unnötig verwirrend, im Fortschreiten dann zunehmend trivial. Von zwei Stunden (Berlinale 2008) auf 99 Minuten (deutsche Premiere) und auf 88 Minuten (amerikanische Premiere 2011) gekürzt.

Shortly before his arrival, Roberts is killed in a car accident with Dafoe at the wheel. At the funeral service, Reynolds reconciles with Carrie-Ann Moss (Kelly Hanson), his separated wife, but continues to argue with Dafoe. He has written a revealing autobiographical book, “ Fireflies in the Garden „, which is about to be published. He reminisces – in flashbacks – and finds out that Roberts wanted to divorce Dafoe. But the fleeing of Dafoe’s grandson Chase Ellison (Christopher), who believes himself responsible for the death of Roberts, and other events make him renounce the publication of the book and lead to a reconciliation with his father.

The poem of the stars of heaven and the fireflies that mimic them on earth, published by Robert Frost in 1928, gave this film its title. And it is itself a firefly : visually beautiful, fascinating in many moments, but irrelevant in its totality. Unnecessarily confusing in its family relationships at the beginning, then increasingly trivial as it progresses. Shortened from two hours (Berlinale 2008) to 99 minutes (German premiere) to 88 minutes (American premiere 2011).
