Malaya, Juli 1933. Carole Lombard (Judith Denning), Sängerin im Kaffeehaus, muß die Stadt verlassen – ihr Mann hat angeblich ihrer Untreue wegen Selbstmord begangen. Der Dschungelhändler Charles Laughton (Horace H. Prin) bietet ihr Heirat an und nimmt sie auf seine Station im Inneren, wo er ein gnadenloses Regiment führt. Lombard verliebt sich rasch in den Aufseher Kent Taylor (David von Elst). Kurz bevor die Eingeborenen sich gegen Laughton erheben, kann  Lombard mit Taylor die Station verlassen. Bei einer unbedeutenden Story ein reiner Schauspieler-Film. In dieser Beziehung ein Volltreffer, denn Charles Laughton verkörpert spielerische und freundliche Grausamkeit perfekt, und Lombard hat, vor allem zu Beginn, eine hohe Präsenz, obwohl ihre Verbindung mit Laughton nicht ganz plausibel ist.

Malaya, July 1933: Carole Lombard (Judith Denning), a singer in a coffee house, is forced to leave the city – her husband has allegedly committed suicide because of her infidelity. Jungle trader Charles Laughton (Horace H. Prin) offers to marry her and takes her to his station in the interior, where he runs a merciless regiment. Lombard quickly falls in love with the overseer Kent Taylor (David von Elst). Shortly before the natives rise up against Laughton, Lombard is able to leave the station with Taylor. Laughton ignores the danger…

A purely actor-driven film with an insignificant story. In this respect, it’s a bull’s eye, as Charles Laughton perfectly embodies playful and friendly cruelty, and Lombard has a strong presence, especially at the beginning, although her connection with Laughton is not entirely plausible.
