Verfluchtes Land

Die Ozark Berge, in den 1890ern. Tom Fadden (Jim Lane) hilft der Familie (Matthews) bei ihrem Schwarzbrenner Geschäft und wird von Gesetzeshütern angeschossen. Ihm hilft überraschend der Fremde Harry Carey  (Daniel Howitt), der sich, was niemand versteht, in der Gegend niederlassen will. Er kauft ausgerechnet die „Moaning Meadows“ Parzelle, wo einst (Sarah Matthews) starb, verlassen von ihrem Mann. Ihm, seinem Vater, hat John Wayne (Mat Matthews) Rache geschworen. Der Familie geht es schlecht; auf „Moaning Meadows“ soll es spuken. Doch Carey fühlt sich wohl dort. Er tut Gutes und bezahlt einen Arzt in der Stadt, damit die alte blinde Nachbarin Marjorie Main (Granny Becky) wieder sehen kann. Doch sie erkennt sofort, daß Carey Waynes Vater ist. Es kommt zum Duell zwischen beiden, und Carey schießt Wayne an. Carey lässt ihn operieren und Wayne erfährt, daß Careys Verhaftung und eine Gefängnisstrafe der Grund für das „Verlassen“ der Mutter waren. Das führt zur Versöhnung.

Kein Western, sondern ein christlich geprägtes Drama, indem eine Örtlichkeit das Seelenleben einer ganzen Gruppe bestimmt – selbst das von John Wayne. Harry Carey bringt dann die Katharsis. Der Roman war ein Bestseller, der hier das dritte Mal verfilmt wurde, und seine Originalschauplätze bilden heute eine Touristenattraktion.

The Ozark Mountains in the 1890s. Tom Fadden (Jim Lane) helps the family (Matthews) with their moonshine business and is shot by lawmen. He is surprisingly helped by a stranger, Harry Carey (Daniel Howitt), what nobody understands, who wants to settle in the area. Of all things, he buys the ‘Moaning Meadows’ plot where (Sarah Matthews) once died, abandoned by her husband. John Wayne (Mat Matthews) has sworn revenge on his father. The family is in a bad way; ‘Moaning Meadows’ is said to be haunted. But Carey feels at home there. He does good and pays a doctor in town so that the old blind neighbour Marjorie Main (Granny Becky) can see again. But she immediately recognises that Carey is Wayne’s father. A duel ensues between the two, and Carey shoots Wayne. Carey has him operated on and Wayne learns that Carey’s arrest and a prison sentence were the reason for his mother’s ‘abandonment’. This leads to reconciliation.

Not a western, but a drama with a Christian flavour, in which a location determines the mental life of an entire group – even that of John Wayne. Harry Carey then brings the catharsis. The novel was a bestseller, which was filmed here for the third time, and its original locations are now a tourist attraction.
