Tiger Bay

Victor Garland (Michael), ein junger Engländer, will beweisen, daß Gutes und Romantik auch in Tiger Bay existieren, einem Vergnügungs-Slum unter französischer Verwaltung. Dort betreibt Anna May Wong (Lui Chang) eine Bar und will ihre junge Stiefschwester Rene Ray (Letty) beschützen. Doch in der Bar muß Garland sie vor dem Rowdy Henry Victor (Olaf) bewahren, wird verletzt. Garland und Ray verlieben sich ineinander. Victor will von Wong Schutzgelder erpressen. Die weist das stolz zurück. Victor nimmt Wong ihr Personal, und sie bemüht die Polizei. Victor entführt Ray. Während Garland sie rettet, besucht Victor Wong. Die erkauft eine schriftliche Order zu Rays Freilassung. Dann tötet sie Victor. Um eine lange Gefängnisstrafe zu verhüten, nimmt sie Gift.

B-Film, dessen Handlung wenig Phantasie verrät und dessen Ausstattung des Sündenbabels „Tiger Bay“ von Sparsamkeit gezeichnet ist. Aber das gilt nicht für die Präsenz von Anna May Wong: sie kann selbst dies Werk noch erträglich machen.

Victor Garland (Michael), a young Englishman, wants to prove that goodness and romance also exist in Tiger Bay, a pleasure slum under French administration. Anna May Wong (Lui Chang) runs a bar there and wants to protect her young stepsister Rene Ray (Letty). But in the bar Garland has to protect her from the hooligan Henry Victor (Olaf) and is injured. Garland and Ray fall in love. Victor wants to extort protection money from Wong. She proudly rejects this. Victor takes Wong’s staff and she calls the police. Victor kidnaps Ray. While Garland rescues her, Victor visits Wong. She buys a written order for Ray’s release. Then she kills Victor. To avoid a long prison sentence, she takes poison.

A B-movie whose plot betrays little imagination and whose set design for the ‘Tiger Bay’ crime scene is characterised by economy. But that does not apply to the presence of Anna May Wong: she can even make this film bearable.
