The Bat Whispers

Oakdale. Eine Bank wird beraubt. Ein Kassierer verschwindet. Grace Hampton (Dale Van Gordner) ist Mieterin im Hause von Hugh Huntley (Richard Fleming), der sich in Europa aufhält.  Hamptons Nichte Una Merkel (Dale) trifft ein, ferner ein neuer Gärtner. Hinzu kommt Gustav von Seiffertitz (Dr. Venrees), der die baldige Rückkunft von  Huntley ankündigt. Das Haus selbst wird von einem Fledermauswesen heimgesucht, das seine Insassen vertreiben will. Doch die suchen bald nach einem geheimen Raum, wo sie die Beute des Bankraubs vermuten. Der wird auch gefunden, mit Geld darin. Es scheint, als habe Huntley seine eigene Bank ausgeraubt. Huntley wird tot gefunden. Der Fledermausmann flieht, gerät aber in eine Falle. Es ist Chester Morris (Anderson), der vorher als Detektiv auftrat.

Das Breitbild-Verfahren gibt dem Geschehen, einem Kammerspiel, mehr als ein Normalformat es täte, einen Rahmen als Theaterbühne. Für ein Kriminalspiel nach einem Theaterstück ganz passend. Aber West benutzt für Szenenwechsel oder Einstiege öfters eine scheinbar schwerelose (Trick)-Kamera und löst so die Starre des frühen Tonfilmstückes auf.

Oakdale. A bank is robbed. A teller disappears. Grace Hampton (Dale Van Gordner) is a tenant in the home of Hugh Huntley (Richard Fleming), who is in Europe.  Hampton’s niece Una Merkel (Dale) arrives, as does a new gardener. Gustav von Seiffertitz (Dr Venrees) also arrives, announcing Huntley’s imminent return. The house itself is haunted by a bat creature that wants to drive out its occupants. But they soon search for a secret room where they suspect the loot from the bank robbery is hidden. It is also found, with money inside. It seems that Huntley has robbed his own bank. Huntley is found dead. The bat man flees, but falls into a trap. It is Chester Morris (Anderson), who previously acted as a detective.

The widescreen process gives the action, a chamber play, more of a theatre stage setting than a normal format would. Quite appropriate for a crime drama based on a play. But West often uses a seemingly weightless (trick) camera for scene changes or introductions, thus breaking up the rigidity of the early sound film.
