New York 2022. Die prominente Dirigentin Cate Blanchett (Lydia Tár) stellt sich in öffentlicher Veranstaltung den Fragen des « New Yorker ». Sie steht vor der Veröffentlichung ihres Buches über sich und der Einspielung von Mahlers 5. Symphonie. Sie ißt zu Mittag mit ihrem Förderer Mark Strong (Elliot Kaplan), der ihr Programm  « Accordion Fellowships » für junge Dirigentinnen unterstützt. Danach unterrichtet sie an der Juillard School. Sie fliegt nach Berlin zurück, wo sie dem Philharmonischen Orchester vorsteht. Sie probt für Mahler, und für das Rahmenprogramm ein Stück von Elgar. Sie kümmert sich um ihre adoptierte Tochter und ihre Lebenspartnerin Nina Hoss (Sharon Goodnow). Sie erfährt von ihrer Assistentin Noémie Merlant (Francesca Lentini), daß ihre einstige Schülerin Sylvia Flote (Krista Taylor) sich umgebracht hat. Blanchett hatte ihre Anstellung anderswo aktiv blockiert. Blanchett bevorzugt nicht Merlant, sondern einen Dritten, als neuen Kapellmeister. Merlant kündigt. . Zudem protegiert Blanchett Sophie Kauer (Olga Metkina) als neue Cellistin. Die « New York Post » berichtet, daß Blanchett ihre Position für ihre sexuellen Vorlieben ausnutze. Die Eltern von Flote verklagen sie. Blanchett nimmt Kauer mit nach New York, wo es bei der Vorstellung ihres Buches Proteste gibt. Kauer geht auf Distanz. Zurück in Berlin dirigiert Strong die 5. Symphonie, wird von Blanchett öffentlich attackiert. Die flüchtet in ihr Elternhaus in New York, nimmt ein Engagement auf den Philippinen an.

New York 2022. The prominent conductor Cate Blanchett (Lydia Tár) takes questions from the “ New Yorker “ at a public event. She is about to publish her book about herself and her recording of Mahler’s 5th Symphony. She has lunch with her patron Mark Strong (Elliot Kaplan), who supports her “ Accordion Fellowships “ programme for young female conductors. She then teaches at the Juillard School. She flies back to Berlin, where she presides over the Philharmonic Orchestra. She rehearses for Mahler, and for the supporting programme a piece by Elgar. She looks after her adopted daughter and her life partner Nina Hoss (Sharon Goodnow). She learns from her assistant Noémie Merlant (Francesca Lentini) that her former student Sylvia Flote (Krista Taylor) has committed suicide. Blanchett had actively blocked her employment elsewhere. Blanchett prefers not Merlant, but a third party, as the new chapel master. Merlant quits. . Blanchett also sponsors Sophie Kauer (Olga Metkina) as the new cellist. The „New York Post“ reports that Blanchett exploits her position for her sexual preferences. Flote’s parents sue her. Blanchett takes Kauer to New York, where there are protests at the presentation of her book. Kauer keeps her distance. Back in Berlin, Strong conducts the 5th Symphony and is publicly attacked by Blanchett. She flees to her parents‘ house in New York and accepts an engagement in the Philippines.

Cate Blanchett, almost always on screen, in the parforcetour of a brilliant woman who struggles with her brilliance and refuses to go down. Her perception is that of the beholder, and her sins, though forgivable, the gateways of her enviers, the cartel of the mediocre. Powerful and fascinating exploration of a character that wears its extra length easily.
