Tagebuch der Geliebten

Paris, März 1884. Die junge Malerin Lili Darvas (Maria Baschkirtzeff) will prominent werden. Den Antrag ihres Lehrers Attila Hörbiger (Bassieux) lehnt sie ab. Der Arzt Szöke Szakall (Dr. Walitzky) ist ihr ergebener väterlicher Freund. Zu dessen Entsetzen will sie in der verrufenen Gegend um die Bastille Gassenjungen malen und wird auch prompt bestohlen. Der Schriftsteller Hans Járay (Guy de Maupassant) rettet die Situation – und gibt sich als ‘Pferdehändler’ aus. Unter dieser Anonymität finden die beiden Gefallen aneinander, während Járay nichtsahnend Hörbiger öffentlich als wenig talentiert kritisiert und von seiner verschmähten Liebe Etha von Storm (Jenny) in die Hand geschossen und von Szakall ärztlich versorgt wird. Auf dem Ball einer russischen Gräfin klärt Szakall den eifersüchtigen Hörbiger darüber auf, daß Darvas todkrank ist und bald sterben wird. Darvas hört mit und trennt sich von Járay mit der Begründung, sie müsse ihrer Kunst leben. Kurz darauf bricht sie beim Malen zusammen. Hörbiger hat – gegen die Stimme von Járay – die goldene Medaille der Kunstausstellung gewonnen, die Darvas auch anstrebte. Szakall bittet Hörbiger, den abgetauchten Járay zu Darvas zu holen. Der tut das und behauptet zugleich gegenüber Darvas, er bringe ihr die ihr zuerkannte Goldmedaille. Darvas stirbt im Angesicht von Járay.

Zwischen Baschkirtzeff und Maupassant gab es wohl nur einen Briefwechsel – und nicht von Liebesbriefen. Zudem hat die Malerin ihn anonym begonnen. Doch der Film von Kosterlitz, als historische Schnulze denkbar, hat andere Schwerpunkte. Sein Dreh- und Angelpunkt ist Szakall, den auch der Vorspann als ersten Darsteller nennt und der hier nicht nur die komische Nebenfigur, sondern die menschliche Betreuung des Geschehens innehat. Als Szene hingegen ragt der Auftritt von Frida Richard als Wahrsagerin für die beiden Liebenden heraus.

Paris, March 1884. The young painter Lili Darvas (Maria Baschkirtzeff) wants to become prominent. She rejects the proposal of her teacher Attila Hörbiger (Bassieux). The doctor Szöke Szakall (Dr. Walitzky) is her devoted fatherly friend. To his dismay, she wants to paint ragamuffins in the disreputable area around the Bastille and is promptly robbed. The writer Hans Járay (Guy de Maupassant) saves the day – and poses as a ‚horse dealer‘. Under this anonymity, the two take a liking to each other, while Járay unsuspectingly criticises Hörbiger publicly as not very talented and is shot in the hand by his spurned love Etha von Storm (Jenny) and receives medical attention from Szakall. At the ball of a Russian countess, Szakall informs the jealous Hörbiger that Darvas is terminally ill and will soon die. Darvas overhears and separates from Járay on the grounds that she has to live her art. Shortly afterwards she collapses while painting. Hörbiger has won – against Járay’s vote – the golden medal of the art exhibition, which Darvas was also aiming for. Szakall asks Hörbiger to bring the absconded Járay to Darvas. He does so and at the same time claims to Darvas that he is bringing her the gold medal she was awarded. Darvas dies in the face of Járay.

There was probably only a correspondence between Bashkirtzeff and Maupassant – and not of love letters. Moreover, the painter began it anonymously. But Kosterlitz’s film, conceivable as a historical tearjerker, has other focal points. Its lynchpin is Szakall, whom the opening credits also name as the first actor and who here is not only the comic supporting figure but the human caretaker of the action. As a scene, however, Frida Richard’s appearance as a fortune teller for the two lovers stands out.
