Culver City, 1937. Bei den Dreharbeiten zu „Way Out West“ möchte Steve Coogan (Stan Laurel) bei Produzent Danny Huston (Hal Roach) eine Gehaltserhöhung verhandeln; John C. Reilly (Oliver Hardy) ist zurückhaltend. Coogans Vertrag läuft aus, Reillys läuft noch. Das Duo ist auseinander. England 1953. Coogan hat eine Bühnentour für die beiden arrangiert und verhandelt über „Robin Hood“, ein Filmprojekt. Die erst halbleeren Säle füllen sich durch Publicity-Maßnahmen. Das Filmprojekt zerschlägt sich, aber Coogan informiert Reilly nicht. Nach einem erfolgreichen Auftritt in London, zu dem auch die Ehefrauen der beiden angereist sind, streiten sie über die Umstände ihrer vormaligen Trennung. Kurz darauf fällt Reilly nach einem Schwächeanfall aus. Coogan will nicht mit einem anderen Partner weitermachen. Gegen den Rat der Ärzte macht Oliver dann für Auftritte in Irland doch weiter.

Die Dramatisierung des letzten Zusammenwirkens von Laurel und Hardy profitiert vom Sympathievorschuß des Duos, der bis heute wirksam ist. Sie bemüht sich demonstrativ um Charakterisierung, man kann diese Teile des Drehbuchs rot ankreuzen. Der Stil ist jener der emotionalen Schubladen eines Durchschnittsfilms. Es gibt aber auch Einfälle: sie stammen sämtlich von Stan Laurel und sind hineinkopiert. Die beiden Darsteller leisten jedoch gute Arbeit.

Culver City, 1937: During the shooting of „Way Out West“ Steve Coogan (Stan Laurel) wants to negotiate a pay raise with producer Danny Huston (Hal Roach); John C. Reilly (Oliver Hardy) is reluctant. Coogan’s contract expires, Reilly’s still running. The duo is split. England 1953; Coogan has arranged a stage tour for the two and negotiates „Robin Hood“, a film project. The half-empty auditoriums are filled with publicity. The film project falls apart, but Coogan does not inform Reilly. After a successful performance in London, to which the wives of the two have also travelled, they argue about the circumstances of their former separation. Shortly afterwards, Reilly drops out after a fit of weakness. Coogan does not want to continue with another partner. Against the advice of the doctors, Oliver then continues for appearances in Ireland after all.

The dramatization of the last collaboration of Laurel and Hardy profits from the duo’s sympathy advance, which is still effective today. It demonstratively strives for characterization, you can mark these parts of the script in red. The style is that of the emotional drawers of an average film. But there are also ideas: they all originate from Stan Laurel and are copied into it. But the two actors do a good job.
