22. Juli 1922. Auf dem Lastkahn „Anna“ leben dessen Eigentümer Friedrich Taeger (Ullrich), dessen junge Frau Edith Posca (Anna) und der Bootsmann Harry Nestor (Fritz Kempf). Der liebt Posca und will auf einem großen Dampfer anheuern. Abends sitzt man beisammen und fährt am Varieté ‚ElDorado‘ am Ufer vorbei. Dort hat gerade der Steptänzer Otto Treptow (Fredy) die Schublade des Athleten (Xaver Schmidt) durchwühlt und, von ihm gestellt, diesen erstochen. Auf der Flucht springt er ins Wasser und wird von der Kahnbesatzung herausgefischt. Er macht sofort Posca an, die seine feine Gewandung in Ordnung bringt. Am Sonntag, tags darauf, erklärt er, noch an Bord bleiben zu wollen. Als ein Ausflugsschiff vorbeifährt, lädt er dessen Gesellschaft zu einem Tanzvergnügen im Laderaum des Kahns ein – für Taeger, Posca und Nestor eine neue Erfahrung. Am Montagmorgen sieht Nestor Treptow Posca nachstellen und verlässt das Schiff. An Land liest er Treptows Steckbrief. Der will nun Taeger loswerden und Posca zu sich zwingen. Er und Taeger kämpfen am Bootsdeck, stürzen ins Wasser und kommen um. Nestor kommt mit der Polizei an. Für ihn und Posca ist der Weg jetzt frei. Stummfilm.

Altes Deutschland und urbaner Internationalismus im Konflikt: Galeen verfilmte ein vom Publizisten Sieburg geprägtes Drehbuch – die Quadriga der Figuren leidet in ihrer Persönlichkeit darunter, daß sie ein Gleichnis darstellen müssen. So entsteht Stummfilmmimik statt Natürlichkeit. In seinen Arbeits- und Landschaftsbildern sprengt der Film jedoch die ihm vom Sujet gesetzten Grenzen; dies macht heute seine Attraktivität aus.

22 July 1922: The barge „Anna“ is owned by Friedrich Taeger (Ullrich), his young wife Edith Posca (Anna) and the boatman Harry Nestor (Fritz Kempf). He loves Posca and wants to sign on with a big steamer. In the evening they sit together and pass the variety theatre ‚ElDorado‘ on the shore. There the tap dancer Otto Treptow (Fredy) has just rummaged through the drawer of the athlete (Xaver Schmidt) and, confronted by him, has stabbed him. As he flees, he jumps into the water and is fished out by the barge crew. He immediately turns on Posca, who fixes his fine garb. On Sunday, the next day, he declares that he wants to stay on board. When an excursion boat passes by, he invites its company to a dance in the hold of the barge – a new experience for Taeger, Posca and Nestor. On Monday morning, Nestor sees Treptow stalking Posca and leaves the ship. On land he reads Treptow’s wanted poster. Treptow now wants to get rid of Taeger and force Posca to join him. He and Taeger fight on the boat deck, fall into the water and are killed. Nestor arrives with the police. The way is now clear for him and Posca. Silent Movie.

Old Germany and urban internationalism in conflict: Galeen filmed a script coined by the publicist Sieburg – the quadriga of the characters suffers in personality from the fact that they have to represent a parable. The result is silent film mimicry instead of naturalness. In its images of work and landscapes, however, the film goes beyond the limits set by its subject; this is what makes it so attractive today.
