Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod

Cattle Corner. Am Bahnhof warten drei Männer auf einen Zug. Ihm entsteigt Charles Bronson (Mundharmonika) und erschießt sie. Henry Fonda (Frank) fehlt ihm. Sweetwater. Der Wüstenfarmer Frank Wolff (Bradwick McBain) bereitet mit seinen Kindern die Ankunft seiner Ehefrau Claudia Cardinale (Jill) vor. Alle werden von Fonda und seinen Leuten erschossen. Cardinale wartet am Bahnhof vergeblich und lässt sich zur Farm fahren. Sie erhält Besuch vom flüchtigen Sträfling Jason Robards (Manuel ‚Cheyenne‘ Gutiérrez) und von Bronson. Fonda berichtet währendessen an seinen Boss, den Eisenbahnchef Gabriele Ferzetti (Morton), der Wolff nur hatte einschüchtern wollen. Fonda, unbeirrt, nimmt nun Cardinale aufs Korn und die Farm für sich selbst. Bronson erkennt, daß Wolff mit einer Wasserstelle ein Schlüsselgrundstück für Ferzettis neue Strecke hatte, und vertraglich rechtzeitig einen Bahnhof bauen musste. Fonda bringt Cardinale zur Versteigerung der Farm, die Bronson mit der Belohnung auf Robards ersteigert. Es kommt zum Showdown zwischen ihm und Fonda, in dem Bronson sich als Bruder eines früheren Opfers von Fonda zu erkennen gibt. Robards, der seine Leute einen Bahnhof in Sweetwater hatte bauen lassen, kehrt zurück und stirbt. Bronson nimmt vorläufig Abschied von Cardinale, als der erste Zug in Sweetwater einfährt.

Eine fulminante Sequenz zu Beginn am Bahnhof von Cattle Corner – eine Steigerung ist nicht mehr möglich. Danach bis zum Ende des Films schwächere Widerholungen ihres Prinzips. Handlung scheint Nebensache. Einige Figuren werden überlebensgroß aufgebaut – die anderen kommen kaum noch vor. Wirkliche Menschen nur Staffage. Da viel vom Immergleichen geboten wird, stellt die Sättigung sich deutlich vor Ablauf der überlangen Laufzeit ein.

Cattle Corner. At the station, three men are waiting for a train. Charles Bronson (Harmonica) gets off and shoots them. Henry Fonda (Frank) is missing. Sweetwater. Desert farmer Frank Wolff (Bradwick McBain) prepares with his children for the arrival of his wife Claudia Cardinale (Jill). All are shot by Fonda and his men. Cardinale waits in vain at the station and gets a ride to the farm. She receives a visit from escaped convict Jason Robards (Manuel ‚Cheyenne‘ Gutiérrez) and Bronson. Fonda, meanwhile, reports to his employer, railway boss Gabriele Ferzetti (Morton), who had only wanted to intimidate Wolff. Fonda, undeterred, now takes aim at Cardinale and the farm for himself. Bronson realises that Wolff had a key piece of land for Ferzetti’s new line with a watering hole, and by contract had to build a station in time. Fonda brings Cardinale to the auction of the farm, which Bronson buys with the reward on Robards. A showdown ensues between him and Fonda, with Bronson revealing himself to be the brother of one of Fonda’s previous victims. Robards, who had his men build a station in Sweetwater, returns and dies. Bronson bids Cardinale a temporary farewell as the first train pulls into Sweetwater.

A brilliant sequence at the beginning at the railway station in Cattle Corner – there is no way to increase it. After that, weaker repetitions of its principle until the end of the film. The plot seems secondary. Some figures are built up larger than life – the others hardly appear. Real people are only staffage. Since there is a lot of the same stuff, saturation sets in well before the end of the overlong running time.
