Silver Blaze

London. Lyn Harding (Prof. Moriarty) mietet ein Büro an. Der Buchmacher Gilbert Davise (Miles Stanford) sucht ihn auf, damit er verhindere, daß er Pferdewetten gegen das Rennpferd Silver Blaze verliere, das Harding verschwinden lassen soll. Arthur Wontner (Sherlock Holmes) reist aufs Land nach Devon, um Lawrence Grossmith (Sir Henry Baskerville) aufzusuchen. Doch dort erwartet ihn Arbeit: Silver Blaze, das Robert Horton (Col. Ross) gehört, ist aus dem Stall verschwunden, sein Bewacher getötet – am Tage eines großen Rennens.. Inspektor John Turnbull (Lestrade) bittet Holmes um Hilfe. Der argwöhnt eine Beteiligung Hardings und findet das Pferd rasch. Es nimmt am Rennen teil – auch wenn Harding dabei den Jockey anschießen lässt. Wontner bleibt noch, Ian Fleming (Dr. Watson) in letzter Sekunde aus Hardings Gewalt zu befreien.

Obwohl nicht schlechter besetzt als die anderen Filme mit Wontner als Detektiv, hebt diese Inszenierung einer aufgebesserten Kurzgeschichte von Doyle nie ab. Dramatik fehlt, Dialog reichlich, und die Szenen in unpointiertem „und dann“. Aber Wontner bleibt stets für Holmes eine gute Besetzung.

London. Lyn Harding (Prof Moriarty) rents an office. The bookmaker Gilbert Davise (Miles Stanford) visits him to prevent him from losing horse bets on the racehorse Silver Blaze, which Harding is to make disappear. Arthur Wontner (Sherlock Holmes) travels to the Devon countryside to see Lawrence Grossmith (Sir Henry Baskerville). But work awaits him there: Silver Blaze, owned by Robert Horton (Col. Ross), has disappeared from the stables and his guardian has been killed – on the day of a big race. Inspector John Turnbull (Lestrade) asks Holmes for help. He suspects Harding’s involvement and quickly finds the horse. It takes part in the race – even if Harding has the jockey shot in the process. It remains for Wontner to free Ian Fleming (Dr Watson) from Harding’s grasp at the last second.

Although the cast is no worse than the other films with Wontner as the detective, this production of an improved short story by Doyle never takes off. There’s a lack of drama, plenty of dialogue, and the scenes in un-pointed ‘and then’. But Wontner always remains a good casting for Holmes.
