Sappho

Johannes Riemann (Richard de la Croix) fährt zu seinem geistesgestörten Bruder Alfred Abel (Andreas de la Croix) ins Sanatorium. Ursache von Abels Erkrankung war seine wahnhafte Liebe zu Pola Negri (Lucille de la Rock, genannt Sappho), einer Lebedame. Die lernt Riemann im ‘Odeon’ selbst kennen – die entstehende beiderseitige Liebe ist aufrichtig. Man fährt gemeinsam an die See. Doch der Automobilfabrikant Albert Steinrück (Georg Bertink), den Negri verlassen hat, klärt Riemann über die Vergangenheit auf und wie Abel wahnsinnig wurde. Abel bricht aus, tötet einen Pfleger und trifft auf einem Karnevalsball Riemann und Negri. Er erwürgt Negri…  Stummfilm

Der Roman von Alexandre Dumas dem Älteren, auf den der Film sich beruft, konnte nicht identifiziert werden. Die Suggestion, Pola Negri könne einen Mann zum Wahnsinn treiben, der nicht schon wahnsinnig ist, ist Kolportage und überzeugt nicht recht, aber seit ihrer Etablierung durch Lubitsch ist sie hier als femme fatale überzeugender geworden.

Johannes Riemann (Richard de la Croix) travels to the sanatorium to visit his mentally disturbed brother Alfred Abel (Andreas de la Croix). The cause of Abel’s illness was his delusional love for Pola Negri (Lucille de la Rock, known as Sappho), a living lady. Riemann gets to know her in the ‚Odeon‘ – the mutual love that develops is sincere. They travelled to the seaside together. But the car manufacturer Albert Steinrück (Georg Bertink), whom Negri has left, tells Riemann about the past and how Abel went mad. Abel escapes, kills a carer and meets Riemann and Negri at a carnival ball. He strangles Negri… Silent film

The novel by Alexandre Dumas the Elder, on which the film is based, could not be identified. The suggestion that Pola Negri could drive a man to madness who is not already insane is colportage and not really convincing, but since her establishment by Lubitsch, she has become more convincing here as a femme fatale.
