New York City. Der Stahlbauarbeiter James Gandolfini (Nick Murder) wird von seiner Frau Susan Sarandon (Kitty Kane) und seinen Töchtern Mandy Moore (Baby), Mary Louise Parker (Constance) und Aida Turturro (Rosebud) ausgegrenzt, als Sarandon ein Gedicht Gandolfinis an dessen Freundin, die Reizwäscheverkäuferin Kate Winslet (Tula) findet. Sarandon macht sich mit ihrem Vetter Christopher Walken (Bo) auf die Suche nach Winslet in der Stadt. Gandolfini lässt sich mittlerweile beschneiden, um damit Winslet zu gefallen. Die hat eine Auseinandersetzung im Reizwäscheshop mit Sarandon. Winslet möchte, daß Gandolfini sich zu ihr bekennt, doch der will zurück zu Sarandon. Die bleibt distanziert. Gandolfini hat Lungenkrebs. Vor seinem Tode kommt es zu einer teilweisen Versöhnung.

Die Geschichte, dünn, könnte in einem Kurzfilm von 20 Minuten oder in einem Looney Tune Trickfilm in sieben Minuten erzählt werden. Doch Turturro projiziert das reiche und doch simple Innenleben der Protagonisten, das keiner Geschmackszensur unterliegt, in sie hinein und betrachtet alles von außen. Nicht alles, was gezeigt wird, geschieht auch; der Gegensatz zur kargen Realität wird in einer Folge Einstellungen regelmäßig wieder hergestellt. In der Musik eine Abfolge von Schlagerhits. Der Film glitzert nicht, kommt aber gut über die Runden.

Steel construction worker James Gandolfini (Nick Murder) is ostracized by his wife Susan Sarandon (Kitty Kane) and his daughters Mandy Moore (Baby), Mary Louise Parker (Constance) and Aida Turturro (Rosebud) when Sarandon finds a poem by Gandolfini to his girlfriend, the lingerie saleswoman Kate Winslet (Tula). Sarandon sets off with her cousin Christopher Walken (Bo) in search of Winslet in the city. In the meantime, Gandolfini has himself circumcised in order to please Winslet. She has an argument with Sarandon in the lingerie shop. Winslet wants Gandolfini to confess to her, but he wants to go back to Sarandon. She remains distant. Gandolfini has lung cancer. Before his death there is a partial reconciliation.

The story, thin, could be told in a short film of 20 minutes or in a Looney Tune cartoon in seven minutes. But Turturro projects the rich yet simple inner life of the protagonists, which is not subject to any censorship of taste, into it and looks at everything from the outside. Not everything that is shown happens; the contrast to the barren reality is regularly restored in a series of shots. In the music a sequence of hit songs. The film doesn’t glitter, but it gets by well.
