Rendezvous mit einer Leiche

USA 1937. Piper Laurie (Emily Boynton) zwingt ihren Anwalt David Soul (Jefferson Cope), das Testament ihres verstorbenen Mannes zugunsten der Familie zu verbrennen und erbt nun allein. Sie lädt die Familie zu einer Europareise. In Palästina kommt die Gruppe in die Gesellschaft von Peter Ustinov (Hercule Poirot). Der beobachtet Laurie und ihre Entourage, zu der sich auch Soul und andere gesellt haben. Laurie stirbt, als die meisten unterwegs sind – Mord war der Grund und der britische Kommandant John Gielgud (Colonel Carbury) bittet Ustinov um Ermittlung. Der sieht, daß jeder ein Motiv hatte, kann aber dann Lauren Bacall (Lady Westholme) die Tat beweisen.

Unter den Spielfilmen, in denen Ustinov den Poirot verkörpert, der wohl schwächste. Das liegt nicht an Ustinov, sondern an einer lieblosen Routineregie, die sich an der konstruktionsfreudigen Agatha Christie abmüht. Ustinov mag man oder nicht…

USA 1937: Piper Laurie (Emily Boynton) forces her lawyer David Soul (Jefferson Cope) to burn her late husband’s will in favour of the family and now inherits alone. She invites the family on a trip to Europe. In Palestine, the group comes into the company of Peter Ustinov (Hercule Poirot). He observes Laurie and her entourage, which is joined by Soul and others. Laurie dies when most of them are on their way – murder was the reason and the British commander John Gielgud (Colonel Carbury) asks Ustinov to investigate. He realises that everyone had a motive, but is then able to prove the crime was committed by Lauren Bacall (Lady Westholme).

Of all the feature films in which Ustinov plays Poirot, this is probably the weakest. This is not due to Ustinov, but to a loveless routine direction that labours over Agatha Christie’s constructivist approach. Whether you like Ustinov or not…
