Mord im Pfarrhaus

England ca. 1960. Emilia Fox (Rosemarie Jones) wird im Zug verhaftet, weil aus ihrem Koffer das Blut ihres untreuen Ehemanns und dessen Geliebter tropft. Sie wird verurteilt. Little Wallop, England, die Gegenwart. Pastor Rowan Atkinson (Walter Goodfellow) ist mit der Waise Kristin Scott Thomas (Gloria Goodfellow) verheiratet und von Problemen umgeben, die er vor Arbeit nicht bemerkt. Doch dann kommt als Gouvernante Maggie Smith (Grace Hawkins) ins Haus. Die sorgt für das Verschwinden eines störenden Kläffers und seines Herrchens, für die Entsorgung des unpassenden Liebhabers von Thomas – und Thomas findet heraus, daß Smith die entlassene Mörderin und ihre Mutter ist. Die Leichen sind im See versenkt. Doch Smith zieht es vor, nun abzureisen. Die Familie ist versöhnt. Nur die beiden Ingenieure, die den See trockenlegen und reinigen wollten, befinden sich bald darin.

Ein leiser Film, der nur sehr langsam Fahrt aufnimmt. Seine Personen sind festgelegt, entwickeln sich nicht – bis auf die Ehefrau, die Treue lernt, aber zur Mörderin wird. Aber das ist ja nicht so schlimm. Da das Meiste vorhersehbar ist, bleibt das Interesse des Betrachters verhalten. Gouvernanten sind seit Mary Poppins oft Wesen mit Magie..

England, around 1960: Emilia Fox (Rosemarie Jones) is arrested on a train because the blood of her unfaithful husband and his lover is dripping from her suitcase. She is sentenced. Little Wallop, England, the present day. Pastor Rowan Atkinson (Walter Goodfellow) is married to the orphan Kristin Scott Thomas (Gloria Goodfellow) and is surrounded by problems that he doesn’t notice because of his work. But then governess Maggie Smith (Grace Hawkins) comes to the house. She takes care of the disappearance of a troublesome yapper and his master, the disposal of Thomas‘ inappropriate lover – and Thomas finds out that Smith is the released murderer and her mother. The bodies are dumped in the lake. But Smith prefers to leave now. The family is reconciled. Only the two engineers who wanted to drain and clean the lake soon find themselves in it.

A quiet film that only picks up speed very slowly. Its characters are fixed and do not develop – except for the wife, who learns fidelity but becomes a murderer. But that’s not so bad. Since most of the plot is predictable, the viewer’s interest remains restrained. After Mary Poppins, governesses are often beings with magic.
