The wealthy bourgeois daughter Alida Valli (Renata Croci) learns that her guardian has squandered her fortune and has to earn some money. She tries – on commission – at the encyclopaedia publishing house ‚Power through Knowledge‘ and travels to a lakeside hotel in the north. Not selling, she takes a position at the hotel ‚Albergo de Lago‘. Hotel manager Camillo Pilotto (Giacomo Mori) pursues her; the attention of the local men is focused on her; she secretly begins an affair with the aloof „African“ Fosco Giachetti (Giorgio Amholt). She reluctantly allows herself to be painted by artist Luigi Almirante (Riganti) for his painting „L’amante segreta“, in which she is naked but unrecognisable. Giachetti, married, obtains a divorce from his wife Anita Farra (Teresa Amholt), but at a society gathering where he is also present, the identity of the nude model is revealed by Valli herself. But Giachetti and she get together anyway.

The Valli’s „tale of woe“ is noticeably Teutonic in trivial origin and doesn’t really fit Italy – it doesn’t even have a familial element. The conflict seems artificial and the story patchily developed. This may be because the German dubbed version is missing about 20 minutes of the original version. Emotionally not very touching…
