Mademoiselle Docteur

Paris. Eine Druckerei im Dienste der Deutschen fliegt auf.  Ein Agent wird verhaftet. Berlin. Dita Parlo (Anne-Marie Lesser) stösst zum deutschen Geheimdienst. Bern 1918. Parlo wird nach Saloniki zur Beschaffung französischer Einsatzpläne beordert. Saloniki. Das Deuxième Bureau, der französische Auslandsgeheimdienst, erfährt von ihren Aktivitäten, nicht aber ihre Identität, die als „Lilian Stanley“, Reporterin des New York Star, auftritt. Parlo kommt Schwierigkeiten, als sich zwischen ihr und Pierre Fresnay (Hauptmann Georges Carrère) eine Liebelei entwickelt. Am Ende flieht sie mit dem Automobil, wird verfolgt, herausgeschleudert, der Wagen geht in Flammen auf. Sie verliert den Verstand und kommt in ein Heim.

Eine fiktive Geschichte um die reale „Mademoiselle Docteur“, die deutsche Chefin für den Geheimdienst in Frankreich im ersten Weltkrieg, Elsbeth Schragmüller. Drei Vollbutschreiber von Drehbüchern lieferten die Vorlage, die Pabst visuell attraktiv und mit erzählerischem Geschick umsetzte.

Paris. A printing shop working for the Germans is exposed. An agent is arrested. Berlin. Dita Parlo (Anne-Marie Lesser) joins the German secret service. Bern, 1918. Parlo is sent to Salonika to obtain French operational plans. Salonika. The Deuxième Bureau, the French foreign intelligence service, learns of her activities, but not her identity, which is that of ‘Lilian Stanley’, a reporter for the New York Star. Parlo gets into trouble when a romance develops between her and Pierre Fresnay (Captain Georges Carrère). In the end, she flees by car, is pursued, thrown out, and the car bursts into flames. She loses her mind and is sent to a home.

A fictional story about the real ‘Mademoiselle Docteur’, the German head of the secret service in France during the First World War, Elsbeth Schragmüller. Three prolific screenwriters provided the template, which Pabst translated into a visually appealing film with narrative skill.
