Loving Vincent

Zeichenfilm. Arles, 1891. Der Postbote Joseph Roulin ersucht seinen Sohn Armand, Van Goghs letzten Brief dessen Bruder Theo nach Paris zu bringen. Roulin, ein Freund Van Goghs, zweifelt an dessem Selbstmord. In Paris erfährt Armand, daß auch Theo verstorben ist. Er begibt sich nach Auvers-sur-Oise zu Dr. Paul Gachet, zuletzt Freund und Arzt Van Gogh. Der ist verreist. Armand ermittelt währenddessen über Van Goghs Tod. Er spricht mit Anwohnern, erfährt von einem Streit mit Gachet und daß der junge René Secretan, der Van Gogh angeblich gerne quälte, eine Waffe hatte. Dr. Gachet erscheint. Er will Armands Brief Theos Witwe geben. Er mutmaßt, selbst zu Van Goghs Tod beigetragen zu haben. Armand kehrt nach Hause zurück. Roulin erhält eine Nachricht von Theos Witwe Johanna. Sie bedankt sich für den Brief.

Wer sich an einem Titan wie van Gogh in der Form versucht, dass er einen Film gemalt in seinem Stil fertigt, muß etwas draufhaben. In diesem Film flackert gelegentlich etwas davon auf, aber er produziert Stil-Wirrwar, gleitet manchmal auf den Level koreanischer Ölportraits nach Photos und, nicht zu vergessen, die Geschichte, die er erzählt, befasst sich mit Details über den Tod des Malers, die wenig über seine Person oder gar Bedeutung sagen. Die Erwartungen an den Film programmieren die Enttäuschung vor.

Cartoon. Arles, 1891: The postman Joseph Roulin asks his son Armand to take Van Gogh’s last letter to his brother Theo in Paris. Roulin, a friend of Van Gogh’s, doubts that Van Gogh commited suicide.  In Paris Armand learns that Theo has also died. He goes to Auvers-sur-Oise to see Dr Paul Gachet, the last friend and doctor of Van Gogh. While Gachet is out of town. Meanwhile, Armand investigates Van Gogh’s death. He talks to local residents, learns about an argument with Gachet and that the young René Secretan, who allegedly liked to torture Van Gogh, had a gun. Dr. Gachet appears. He wants to give Armand’s letter to Theo’s widow. He suspects that he himself contributed to Van Gogh’s death. Armand returns home. Roulin receives a message from Theo’s widow, Johanna. She thanks him for the letter.

Anyone who tries his hand at a titan like Van Gogh to make a film painted in his own style must be excellent. In this film, some of it flickers occasionally, but he produces a jumble of styles, sometimes glides to the level of Korean oil portraits after photos and, not to forget the story he tells, deals with details about the painter’s death that say little about his person or importance. The expectations in the film pre-program the disappointment.
