Liebe in Moll

Neapel, Teatro San Carlo, 1819: Der Geigenvirtouose Danilo Belardinelli (Niccolò Paganini) begeistert sein Publikum, nur der Musikstudent Maurice Ronet (Vincenzo Bellini) lächelt. Belardinelli erklärt er, das sei nicht Respektlosigkeit, sondern die Erkenntnis, noch viel lernen zu müssen. Nach Bestehen des theoretischen Examens im Januar 1820 zu Gast beim Obersten Richter Renzo Ricci (Fumaroli) zu Gast, begegnet Ronet dessen kränkliche Tochter Antonella Lualdi (Maddalena Fumatori).  Er widmet ihr „Casta Diva“, überlässt ihr alle Noten davon. Doch ihr Vater besteht auf ihrer Verlobung mit dem königlichen Sekretär Jacques Castelot (Ernesto Tosi). Die berühmte Sängerin Nadia Gray (Giuditta Pasta) will, daß Ronet ihr für Mailand eine Oper schreibt. Er ist mit „Il pirata“ sehr erfolgreich, muß aber in einen Wettstreit mit Fausto Tozzi (Gaetano Donizetti) treten, dessen „Lucia di Lammermoor“ er nicht zu übertreffen glaubt. Doch seine „Sonnambula“ wird ein Erfolg. Nun soll eine Oper ohne Sentiment folgen. „Norma“ fällt durch. Doch Lualdi ist angereist, gibt Gray „Casta Diva“ als Einlage dafür. Sie sieht auch Ronet mit seinen Flirts und reist zurück. Nun ist die Oper erfolgreich. Ronet eilt nach Neapel, um Lualdi zu sehen, doch zu spät: eine Krankheit lässt sie vor dem Eintreffen des Geliebten sterben.

Ein sehr romantischer Film, in schönen Technicolor Farben und reichlich Musik, sodaß für die unterliegende Liebesgeschichte, ähnlich wie damals, nicht viel Raum bleibt. Mit Ronet als betroffenem Jüngling gut besetzt. Die Affäre mit Fumaroli ist historisch ein verdichtetes Gerücht, aber dieses Gerücht lässt Bellini prosaischer und schlechter aussehen. Lief in Deutschland nur in der DDR im Kino.

Naples, Teatro San Carlo, 1819: the violin virtuoso Danilo Belardinelli (Niccolò Paganini) delights his audience, only music student Maurice Ronet (Vincenzo Bellini) smiles. He tells Belardinelli that this is not disrespect, but the realisation that he still has a lot to learn. After passing the theoretical exam in January 1820, as a guest of the chief justice Renzo Ricci (Fumaroli), Ronet meets the latter’s sickly daughter Antonella Lualdi (Maddalena Fumatori).  He dedicates „Casta Diva“ to her, leaving her all the notes of it. But her father insists on her engagement to the royal secretary Jacques Castelot (Ernesto Tosi). The famous singer Nadia Gray (Giuditta Pasta) wants Ronet to write her an opera for Milan. He is very successful with „Il pirata“, but has to compete with Fausto Tozzi (Gaetano Donizetti), whose „Lucia di Lammermoor“ he believes he cannot surpass. But his „Sonnambula“ is a success. Now an opera without sentiment is to follow. „Norma“ fails. But Lualdi has arrived, gives Gray „Casta Diva“ as an interlude for it. She also sees Ronet with his flirtations and travels back. Now the opera is successful. Ronet rushes to Naples to see Lualdi, but too late: an illness causes her to die before her lover arrives.

A very romantic film, in beautiful Technicolor colours and plenty of music, so that there is not much room for the underlying love story, as it was then. Well cast with Ronet as the troubled youth. The affair with Fumaroli is historically a condensed rumour, but this rumour makes Bellini look more prosaic and worse. Only screened in Germany in the GDR.
