Paris.

Paris. Michael Youn (Jacky Bonnot), an enthusiastic cook, is ousted from every restaurant because of his ambitions. So, as his girlfriend Raphaelle Agogué (Béatrice) is pregnant, he goes to work as a painter in a retirement home. He gives advice to the cooks there. Among the residents is Pierre Vernier (Paul Matter), part-owner of a chain of star restaurants, including the ‚Cargo Lagarde‘, whose part-owner Jean Reno (Alexandre Lagarde) is Youn’s idol. He is under pressure because Julien Boisselier (Stanislas Matter) wants to get rid of him and take over the ‚Cargo‘ when Reno loses a star. So Boisselier cuts off his supplies and poaches staff, organises testers who don’t like Reno’s cooking. Reno has meanwhile hired Youn, who has kept this from Agogué, and she leaves him. Reno travels with Youn to Nevers to visit her parents – and Reno takes an interest in Rebecca Miquel (Carole), the local restaurant chef. On the day the testers arrive, Youn has to get the ingredients alone and prepare the dishes with his cooks from the old people’s home: Reno assists his daughter Salomé Stévenin (Amandine) in defending her literature doctorate. Youn successfully defends the stars, Reno hands over the restaurant to him, and Agogué wants to marry him.

A film doesn’t have to be innovative, may be predictable, without poignancy in its jokes: if only it is well made. This one is. It has charm, taste and is credibly acted, and so it is time well spent, even if it seems conservative and averse to extremes, and the story free of realism…
