Judy

Culver City ca. 1938. Die junge Schauspielerin Darci Shaw (Judy Garland), unter Vertrag bei MGM, wird von Richard Cordery (Louis B. Mayer) zum Wohlverhalten ermahnt und auf die Pflichten hingewiesen, die der Filmstar im Gegensatz zum Mädchen von Gegenüber hat. Los Angeles, ca. 1968. Renée Zellweger (Judy Garland) ist von ihrem Mann Rufus Sewell (Sidney Luft) geschieden, muß aber mit den Kindern bei ihm übernachten, weil das Hotel sie ihrer Schulden wegen nicht mehr aufnimmt. Auf einer Party trifft Zellweger Finn Wittrock (Mickey Deans), einen Nachtclubbesitzer, mit dem sie sich anfreundet. Sie nimmt ein Engagement in England im Nachtclub „The Talk of the Town“ an. Ihre Kinder lässt sie bei Sewell. Sie benötigt jedoch Hilfe, um zuverlässig zu erscheinen und kann die Auftritte kaum bewältigen, die sehr erfolgreich sind, bis sie eines Abends ausrastet und das Publikum beschimpft. Sie braucht ärztliche Hilfe. Wittrock kommt angereist. Er hat einen Deal für Nachtclubs in Aussicht, für den Judy nur ihren Namen hergeben müsste, um zu kassieren. Die beiden heiraten. Er ist ihr fünfter Ehemann. Er fliegt zurück in die USA, der Deal platzt, die Ehe auch. Spontan bestreitet Zellweger noch eine letzte Vorstellung im Theater.

Renée Zellweger hat ganze Arbeit geleistet. Sie hat die Manierismen von Garland studiert, sie leistet stimmlich mehr als erwartet (ohne Garland nahezukommen) und gibt für alle Auftritte ihr bestes. Darauf haben sich Script und Regie ausgeruht. Sie inszenieren diese Auftritte – aber die Titelheldin bleibt eine neurotische Alte, die ihren Zustand auf den bösen Louis B. Mayer schiebt und deren Dialoge außerhalb der Manierismen über Selbstmitleid auf Fernseh-Niveau nicht hinauskommen. Hohl.

Culver City ca. 1938: The young actress Darci Shaw (Judy Garland), under contract at MGM, is admonished by Richard Cordery (Louis B. Mayer) to behave well and is reminded of the duties the film star has in contrast to the girl across the street. Los Angeles, ca. 1968: Renée Zellweger (Judy Garland) is divorced from her husband Rufus Sewell (Sidney Luft), but has to stay at his place with the children because the hotel won’t take her back because of her debts. At a party Zellweger meets Finn Wittrock (Mickey Deans), a nightclub owner she befriends. She accepts an engagement in England in the nightclub „The Talk of the Town“. She leaves her children with Sewell. However, she needs help to show up reliably and can hardly manage the performances, which are very successful, until one evening she freaks out and insults the audience. She needs medical help. Wittrock arrives. He has a deal on the table for nightclubs that Judy would only have to give her name to collect. They’re getting married. He’s her fifth husband. He flies back to the States, the deal is off, the marriage is off. Spontaneously, Zellweger contests one last performance at the theater.

Renée Zellweger has done a great job. She has studied the mannerisms of Garland, she does vocally more than expected (without Garland coming close) and gives her best for all performances. Script and direction have rested on that. They stage these performances – but the title heroine remains a neurotic old woman who attributes her condition to the evil Louis B. Mayer and whose dialogues outside the mannerisms do not get beyond self-pity on TV level. Hollow.
