Jane Eyre

England um 1750. Virginia Bruce (Jane Eyre) verteidigt sich gegen ihre Stiefgeschwister und kommt deshalb ins Waisenhaus. Dort geht es streng zu,  aber nach etlichen Jahren wird sie  Lehrerin dort. Sie entflieht und wird Gouvernante der Tochter von Colin Clive (Edward Rochester). Dort geht es ihr gut – nur einen Teil des Hauses, aus dem Schreie kommen, darf sie nicht betreten. Dort lebt Claire du Bray (Bertha), Clives wahnsinnige Gattin. Eine Scheidung wird vorbereitet. Clive hat sich mit Aileen Pringle  (Blanche Ingram) neu verlobt und lädt sie zu einem Ball zu sich ein.  In der Nacht des Balles setzt du Bray sein Bett in Brand. Bruce rettet sein Leben. Wenige Wochen später gesteht Clive Bruce seine Liebe. Zögerlich willigt sie in eine Heirat ein. Doch du Bray stört die Hochzeit – und Bruce flieht. Sie geht bei Desmond Roberts (Dr. John Rivers) in Stellung. Nun setzt du Bray das Haus in Brand. Clive will sie retten, verliert dabei sein Augenlicht. Als Bruce dies erfährt, kehrt sie zu Clive zurück.

Besser als ihr Ruf: diese recht freie Adaption bietet eine gute und selbstbewußte schauspielerische Leistung von Virginia Bruce, die den Film trägt, und ein gutes Script. Sein sehr knappes Budget, bedingt durch das Billig-Studio Monogram, verhindert jede Ablenkung von der Story.

In England around 1750, Virginia Bruce (Jane Eyre) defends herself against her step-siblings and is therefore sent to an orphanage. Things are strict there, but after several years she becomes a teacher. She escapes and becomes governess to the daughter of Colin Clive (Edward Rochester). She is doing well there – she is only not allowed to enter a part of the house where screams come from. Claire du Bray (Bertha), Clive’s insane wife, lives there. A divorce is being prepared. Clive has become newly engaged to Aileen Pringle (Blanche Ingram) and invites her to a ball.  On the night of the ball, du Bray sets fire to his bed. Bruce saves his life. A few weeks later, Clive confesses his love to Bruce. She hesitantly agrees to marry him. But du Bray interrupts the wedding – and Bruce flees. She takes up residence with Desmond Roberts (Dr John Rivers). Now du Bray sets the house on fire. Clive tries to save her, but loses his sight in the process. When Bruce finds out, she returns to Clive.

Better than its reputation: this rather free adaptation offers a good and self-confident acting performance by Virginia Bruce, who carries the film, and a good script. Its very tight budget, due to the low budget studio Monogram, prevents any distraction from the story.
