In einem Land, das es nicht mehr gibt

Berlin, Hauptstadt der DDR, Frühsommer 1989. Oberschülerin Marlene Burow (Susanne Schulz) will Literatur studieren. Doch weil die Volkspolizei bei ihr George Orwells « 1984 » findet, erhält sie einen Schulverweis und wird in die Zerspahntechnik der Produktion eines Kabelwerks versetzt. In der Strassenbahn dorthin wird sie von David Schütter (Frank Dill) photographiert und landet ungefragt in der Modezeitschrift ‘Sybille’. Dort stellt sie sich vor und bekommt Arbeit – sie lernt auch Schütter und den schwulen Modeschöpfern Sabin Tambrea (Rudi) kennen. Doch die Modefirma darf sie zunächst nicht für die große Modemesse in Leipzig vorsehen – dann aber doch. Dort sorgt Tambrea für einen Eklat, als er sich – in Gegenwart des Volkskammerpräsidenten Hans Klima (Horst Sindermann) – als Dame einen Auftritt gönnt. Burow rettet die Situation, wird aber von der Stasi ausgefragt. In der Folge verschwindet Schütter (er geht nach dem Westen) und Tambrea wird verhaftet. Burow bestreitet jeden Verrat. Die Szene findet mit Schwierigkeiten wieder zusammen.

Die banale kleine Münze des DDR-Regimes verleitet zur Satire. Doch die persönlich gefärbte und ernstgemeinte Geschichte einer allenfalls schwach charismatischen Schülerin ohne erkennbares Profil will das nicht bieten, auch nicht ein Bild der Opposition. So bleibt Anekdotisches, am unteren Rande des Interesses  und ohne Signifikanz.

Berlin, capital of the GDR, early summer 1989. High school student Marlene Burow (Susanne Schulz) wants to study literature. But because the People’s Police find George Orwell’s “ 1984 “ in her possession, she is expelled from school and transferred to the machining department of a cable factory. On the tram there she is photographed by David Schütter (Frank Dill) and ends up in the fashion magazine ‚Sybille‘ without being asked. There she introduces herself and gets work – she also gets to know Schütter and the gay fashion designer Sabin Tambrea (Rudi). But the fashion company is initially not allowed to provide her for the big fashion fair in Leipzig – but then they do. There Tambrea causes a scandal when – in the presence of the President of the Volkskammer, Hans Klima (Horst Sindermann) – he treats himself to an appearance as a lady. Burow saves the day, but is questioned by the Stasi. As a result, Schütter disappears (he goes to the West) and Tambrea is arrested. Burow denies any treason. The scene comes together again with difficulty.

The banal little coin of the GDR regime tempts satire. But the personally coloured and serious story of an at best faintly charismatic schoolgirl without a recognisable profile does not want to offer that, nor does it want to offer a picture of the opposition. So what remains is anecdotal, on the lower edge of interest and without significance.
