Go, Trabi, Go

Bitterfeld 1990. Germanist Wolfgang Stumph (Udo Struutz) will mit seiner Frau Marie Gruber (Rita) und Claudia Schmutzler (Jacqueline Struutz) nach Neapel reisen. Nach Goethes „Italienische Reise“, im Trabant. In Regensburg, bei Verwandten, der erste Halt. Danach in München, wo der Trabi teuer repariert wird. Dann über den Brenner zum Gardasee. Dort entzweit man sich mit Schmutzler, bis sie doch nach Rom mitkommt. Dort wird ihnen die Kamera geraubt; Gruber und Schmutzler jagen dem Räuber hinterher, wobei er versehentlich sein Geld an sie verliert. Sie finden Stumph erst nicht mehr und quartieren sich im Luxus Hotel Hassler ein. Stumph schläft im Trabi. Erst am Morgen trifft man sich an der spanischen Treppe. Weiter geht es nach Neapel. Dort verliert man fast den Trabi. Mit ihm, nicht mehr ganz wie am Anfang, fährt man zurück. Ergebnis der Reise: Gruber ist schwanger.

Sehnsuchtssatire im Geiste der noch frischen deutschen Wiedervereinigung. Durchaus liebevolle Zeichnung der Marotten von Ossis und Wessies und des Goetheschen Dranges nach Süden. Die junge « Schackelin «  Claudia Schmutzler ist der für alle akzeptable Kristallisationspunkt des Geschehens, das auf Realismus keinerlei Wert legt. Heute ein angenehmer Erinnerungsposten.

After Goethe’s „Italian Journey“, in a Trabant. In Regensburg, at relatives‘, the first stop. Then in Munich, where the Trabi undergoes expensive repairs. Then over the Brenner Pass to Lake Garda. There they fall out with Schmutzler, until she comes along to Rome after all. There their camera is stolen; Gruber and Schmutzler chase after the robber, where he accidentally loses his money to them. They don’t find Stumph at first and put up at the luxury Hotel Hassler. Stumph sleeps in the Trabi. It is not until the morning that they meet at the Spanish Steps. They continue on to Naples. There they almost lose the Trabi. With it, not quite as it was at the beginning, they drive back. The result of the journey: Gruber is pregnant.

A satire of longing in the spirit of the still fresh German reunification. A thoroughly affectionate drawing of the foibles of East and West Germans and of Goethe’s urge to go south.
