Glück unterwegs

Böhmen ca. 1850. Dem Kleinstadt-Theater von Gustav Waldau wird das Licht abgestellt. Zugkräftige Stücke fehlen; für die Partitur von Flotows „Martha“ müssten 2000 Taler bezahlt werden. Er schickt Kapellmeister O.W. Fischer (Florian Stadler) und Paul Kemp (Gustav Molfenter) nach Wien, um dort Musik und Texte einfach mitzuschreiben. Unterwegs verliebt Fischer sich in Dora Komar (Lena Berger), die zum Theater möchte. Fischer hält sie für (Sorelli), eine berühmte Sängerin, komponiert ein Lied für sie. Sie trägt es vor einer Hochzeitsgesellschaft vor. Doch Fischer und Kemp werden verhaftet – die Polizei hält sie für Räuber. Im Gefängnis können sie ihre eigene Oper schreiben. Wieder daheim, durchschaut Waldau, daß es sich nicht um „Martha“ handelt. Gegen den Widerstand von Fischer, der ein Auftreten von (Sorelli) in der falschen Oper fürchtet, lässt Waldau das Stück aufführen – und Komar singt.

Eine frühe, grosse Rolle für Fischer, der hier überwiegend strahlt und in der Profilierung hinter seinem Gefährten Kemp zurückbleibt. Nicht übersehen: die Handlung spielt vor er Etablierung des Urheberrechts. Ein hübscher Film, in Prag gedreht.

Bohemia, circa 1850. Gustav Waldau’s small-town theatre is facing closure. It lacks popular plays, and the score for Flotow’s Martha would cost 2,000 thalers. He sends bandmaster O.W. Fischer (Florian Stadler) and Paul Kemp (Gustav Molfenter) to Vienna to simply copy down music and lyrics. On the way, Fischer falls in love with Dora Komar (Lena Berger), who wants to go to the theatre. Fischer mistakes her for (Sorelli), a famous singer, and composes a song for her. She performs it at a wedding party. But Fischer and Kemp are arrested – the police mistake them for robbers. In prison, they are able to write their own opera. Back home, Waldau realises that it is not ‘Martha’. Against Fischer’s resistance, who fears that (Sorelli) will appear in the wrong opera, Waldau has the piece performed – and Komar sings.

An early, major role for Fischer, who shines throughout and remains in the shadow of his companion Kemp. Don’t overlook the fact that the plot takes place before copyright was established. A lovely film, shot in Prague.
