Geliebte Köchin

1885, im französischen Jura. Benoît Magimel (Dodin Bouffant) kocht mit seiner Geliebten Köchin Juliette Binoche (Eugénie Chatagn) für Freunde und Kenner Mahlzeiten. Binoche hat sich geweigert, ihn zu heiraten. Die junge Bonnie Chagneau-Ravoire (Pauline) hilft in der Küche aus und erweist sich als sicher im Erkennen von Geschmäckern. Doch Binoche ist nicht wohl, der Arzt ratlos. Sie stirbt. Magimel ist zunächst am Boden zerstört. Bonnie Chagneau-Ravoire will bei ihm lernen, doch ohne Köchin geht das nicht. Endlich, mit Hilfe der Freunde, findet Magimel, was er sucht.

Der Film geht auf in der Darstellung der Küchenarbeit und ihrer Wertschätzung und das gelingt für seine Dauer erstaunlich gut. Allerdings wird viel Hintergrund weggelassen: Daß der Gourmet nicht etwa Gastronom, sondern Magistrat im Ruhestand ist, wird nicht erwähnt – und daß das gepflegte Gourmettum zumeist ein Privileg reicher Franzosen und elitärst war. Aber nur ein Ausländer von weit her wird es wie hier darstellen können.

1885, in the French Jura. Benoît Magimel (Dodin Bouffant) cooks meals for friends and connoisseurs with his lover, chef Juliette Binoche (Eugénie Chatagn). Binoche has refused to marry him. The young Bonnie Chagneau-Ravoire (Pauline) helps out in the kitchen and proves to be adept at recognising flavours. But Binoche is unwell and the doctor is at a loss. She dies. Magimel is initially devastated. Bonnie Chagneau-Ravoire wants to learn from him, but she can’t do it without a cook. Finally, with the help of his friends, Magimel finds what he is looking for.

The film is absorbed in its portrayal of kitchen work and its appreciation, and it succeeds surprisingly well for its length. However, a lot of background is left out: The fact that the gourmet is not a restaurateur, but a retired magistrate, is not mentioned – and that cultivated gourmetism was mostly a privilege of rich Frenchmen and the most elitist. But only a foreigner from far away will be able to portray it like this.
