Father Brown, Detective

Juwelendieb Paul Lukas (Flambeau) lernt Gertrude Michael (Evelyn Fischer) und verliebt sich. In Briefen an Halliwell Hobbes (Sir Leopold Fischer) und an Walter Connolly (Pater Brown) kündigt er an, zehn Diamanten zu stehlen –  aus dem Diadem „Flying Star“. Er will sie Michael schenken. Connollys goldenes Kreuz enthält solche Diamanten. Als Lukas ihn aufsucht, kann er den Diebstahl abwenden. Hobbes kann er die Diamanten stehlen – doch als Lukas Michael bedrängt, weist sie ihn ab. Connolly erkennt, daß sie in Lukas verliebt ist. Gemeinsam wollen sie Lukas reformieren. Lukas nimmt als Priester verkleidet am Eucharistischen Kongress in London teil, in der Hoffnung, Connolly’s goldenes Kreuz zu stehlen. Connolly lässt ihn abblitzen, erklärt ihm, daß seine Methode für Michael falsch sei, und lässt ihn ohne die Diamanten entkommen. Er erhält von ihm die von Hobbes gestohlenen Diamanten. Später stellt Lukas sich der Polizei. Michael wird auf ihn warten.

Pater Brown im ersten seiner wenigen Leinwandauftritte: eine Verfilmung des ersten Buchauftritts, derselben Geschichte, in der später auch Alec Guinness den Pfarrer spielte. Die gänzlich undramatische und etwas klaustrophobische Erzählung bleibt eine Affäre unter Gentlemen – dem Dieb und dem Seelenretter. Die simpleren Typen kommen von der Polizei.

Jewellery thief Paul Lukas (Flambeau) meets Gertrude Michael (Evelyn Fischer) and falls in love. In letters to Halliwell Hobbes (Sir Leopold Fischer) and Walter Connolly (Father Brown), he announces his intention to steal ten diamonds from the ‘Flying Star’ tiara. He wants to give them to Michael as a gift. Connolly’s golden cross contains such diamonds. When Lukas visits him, he is able to prevent the theft. He manages to steal the diamonds from Hobbes – but when Lukas presses Michael, she rejects him. Connolly realises that she is in love with Lukas. Together, they want to reform Lukas. Lukas, disguised as a priest, attends the Eucharistic Congress in London, hoping to steal Connolly’s golden cross. Connolly rebuffs him, explaining that his method is wrong for Michael, and lets him escape without the diamonds. He receives the diamonds stolen by Hobbes from him. Later, Lukas turns himself in to the police. Michael will wait for him.

Father Brown in his first of few screen appearances: a film adaptation of his first appearance in print, the same story in which Alec Guinness later played the priest. The entirely undramatic and somewhat claustrophobic narrative remains an affair between gentlemen – the thief and the saviour of souls. The simpler characters come from the police.
