Paris 1886.

Paris 1886. Engineer Romain Duris (Gustav Eiffel), decorated for the interior construction of the Statue of Liberty, meets his former sweetheart Emma Mackey (Adrienne Bourgès), now married to his friend Pierre Delandonchamps (Antoine des Restac). Her presence at a dinner leads him to announce his bid for the 1889 World’s Fair with a 300 m high tower. Flashback to Bordeaux 1860: Duris saves the life of a worker during the construction of a bridge; he meets Mackey, the daughter of his financier. Both fall in love, but she disappears before a planned marriage. 20 years later, love flares up again; she was prevented from marrying by her parents. Delandonchamps recognises the truth and intervenes. Mackey leaves Duris again, but comes to the inauguration of the tower.

The very big tower and the very big love: the two do not go together. And they both come up short in this film. Everything in it is only an illustration of – nothing. In view of the historical grandeur of the tower events, the fictional love romance is only diminishing. Beyond optical opulence, it is boring and not even good in its acting.
