Downton Abbey: Das große Finale

London 1930.  Lord und Lady Grantham  (Hugh Bonneville und Elizabeth Mc Govern) gehen ins Theater – ein Stück von und mit Art Froushan (Noël Coward). Auf einem Ball tags darauf wird die Scheidung von Michelle Dockery (Mary Talbot) bekannt. Sie müssen den Ball verlassen und kehren nach Downton Abbey zurück. Dockery bleibt in London, empfängt McGoverns Bruder Paul Giamatti (Harold Levinson) und seinen Finanzberater Alessandro Nivola (Gus Sambrook) aus USA. Letzterer verführt Dockery. In Downton Abbey offenbart Giamatti, er habe das Vermögen ihrer Mutter durch Fehlinvestition verloren. Er will neues Geld von der Familie. Doch die will weder das Haus in London verkaufen und auch Nivola kein Geld geben. Der versucht, Dockery wegen ihrer Affäre zu erpressen. Beim Royal Ascot kommt heraus, dass Nivola ein Betrüger ist. Dockery übernimmt die Leitung von Downton. Um den Ruf zu stärken, lädt man den berühmten Froushan  nach Downton Abbey ein. Dessen neues Stück „Private Lives“ ist von Dockerys Scheidung inspiriert. Das Ansehen von Downton Abbey wird wieder hergestellt

Der Film selbst weist Parallelen zu seinem Inhalt auf. Wie die Abbey ihr Problem mit dem Erscheinen von Noel Coward lösen will, so ist Coward inzwischen für den Betrachter die einzige Person, die noch interessiert. Deren Geist aber entfaltet sich nicht so recht. Selbst die Dialoge sind diesmal formelhaft.

London, 1930. Lord and Lady Grantham (Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern) go to the theatre – to see a play written by and starring Art Froushan (Noël Coward). At a ball the following day, Michelle Dockery’s (Mary Talbot) divorce is announced. They are forced to leave the ball and return to Downton Abbey. Dockery remains in London, where she receives McGovern’s brother Paul Giamatti (Harold Levinson) and his financial adviser Alessandro Nivola (Gus Sambrook) from the USA. The latter seduces Dockery. At Downton Abbey, Giamatti reveals that he has lost her mother’s fortune through a bad investment. He wants more money from the family. But they refuse to sell the house in London or give Nivola any money. He tries to blackmail Dockery over her affair. At Royal Ascot, it emerges that Nivola is a fraud. Dockery takes over the running of Downton. To bolster its reputation, the famous Froushan is invited to Downton Abbey. His new play, ‘Private Lives’, is inspired by Dockery’s divorce. Downton Abbey’s reputation is restored.

The film itself bears parallels to its own plot. Just as the Abbey seeks to resolve its problem with Noel Coward’s appearance, Coward has by now become the only character who still holds the viewer’s interest. Yet his character never quite comes into its own. Even the dialogue feels formulaic this time round.
