October 1928. The young couple, Leni Riefenstahl (Maria Maioni) and Ernst Petersen (Hans Brandt), move into the Diavolezea Hut at the foot of Piz Palü, which they intend to climb the following day. Shortly afterwards, Gustav Diessl (Dr Hanns Krafft) arrives; he visits the hut every year. He lost his wife, Mizzi Götzel Weisgerber (Maria), on the mountain in 1925, and recounts the story. When he sets out to climb alone the following day, the couple join him. A storm leaves them in distress. Diessl saves them from freezing to death on the mountain, sacrificing himself in the process. Silent film.
Fanck is enamoured with ice and snow and indulges this passion to excess. This results in some fascinating imagery. But Fanck loves ice and snow more than his audience, who sit shivering and growing impatient after more than two hours. The 1950 remake, *Föhn*, thankfully rectified this.
