Die Köchin und der Präsident

Archipel de Crozet. Forschungsstation Alfred Faure, Antarktis. Der australische TV-Journalistin Arly Jover (Mary) fällt auf, daß die Köchin für die Mannschaft eine Frau ist: Catherine Frot (Hortense Laborie). Frot weigert sich jedoch, über die Zeit zu sprechen, da sie für den französischen Präsidenten kochte. Périgord, vier Jahre zuvor: Ein Beamter holt Frot nach Paris, wo die Provinzköchin erfährt, daß sie für Jean d’Ormesson (der Präsident) kochen soll. Der hat die „haute cuisine“ satt und will lieber einfache französische Küche haben. Sie erhält den jungen Patissier Arthur Dupont (Nicolas Beauvois) als Assistenten und gerät sofort in Konflikt mit der Zentralküche. Doch d’Ormesson ist angetan; nach einem Gespräch darf sie von nun an die Zutaten für ihr Essen selbst beschaffen. Ihre Geschichte wird alterniert von Szenen von Frots Abschiedstag in der Antarktis. In den zwei Jahren ihrer Tätigkeit in Paris wird es zunehmend für sie schwieriger. Dem Präsidenten wird Diät verordnet, was für sie Einschränkungen bedeutet. Und die Kosten ihrer besonderen Zutaten erregen Aufmerksamkeit. Der Präsident kommt in die Küche, ißt Trüffel und sagt, sie hätten es beide schwer. Als der Präsident eine Reise nach Tunesien antritt und sie nachts für ein Mahl aus dem Bett geholt wird, kündigt sie und schreibt dem Präsidenten einen Brief. Ende der Rückblende. Sie nimmt Abschied in der Antarktis und erzählt Jover, sie werde jetzt in Neuseeland Trüffeln züchten.

Die Äusserlichkeiten stimmten, ebenso die Stimmung, sagt Mme Mazet-Delpeuch, die hier portraitiert wird, nur die Einzelheiten sind falsch. Der Film verharrt in Ehrfurcht vor dem Präsidenten, vor der Küche, vor der Köchin, und bleibt bei allem Detail distanziert. Selbst die Szenen in der Antarktis zeigen sie unverändert. Interessant, aber von einem sehr offiziellen Esprit.

Frot, however, refuses to talk about the time when she cooked for the French president. Périgord, four years earlier: an official brings Frot to Paris, where the provincial cook learns that she is to cook for Jean d’Ormesson (the president). He is fed up with „haute cuisine“ and prefers simple French cooking. She is given the young patissier Arthur Dupont (Nicolas Beauvois) as her assistant and immediately comes into conflict with the central kitchen. But d’Ormesson approves; after a conversation, she is allowed to procure the ingredients for her food herself from now on. Her story is alternated with scenes from Frot’s farewell day in Antarctica. During her two years in Paris, things become increasingly difficult for her. The president is put on a diet, which means restrictions for her. And the cost of her special ingredients attracts attention. The president comes into the kitchen, eats truffles and says they both have a hard time. When the president leaves on a trip to Tunisia and she is pulled out of bed at night for a meal, she quits and writes the president a letter. End of flashback. She says goodbye in Antarctica and tells Jover she is now going to grow truffles in New Zealand.

The outward appearances were right, as was the mood, says Mme Mazet-Delpeuch, who is portrayed here, only the details are wrong. The film remains in awe of the president, of the kitchen, of the cook, and remains distant with all the detail. Even the scenes in Antarctica show them unchanged. Interesting, but of a very official esprit.
