Die kanadische Reise

Paris. Der junge Angestellte Pierre Deladonchamps (Mathieu Capelier) wird von Gabriel (Pierre Lesage) aus Montreal angerufen – sein Vater sei verstorben. Deladonchamps kannte ihn nicht, macht sich aber auf den Weg dorthin. Er hat dort zwei Brüder, die er auch nicht kennt. Arcand holt ihn ab, kümmert sich um ihn, rät ihm ab, den Brüdern seine Identität zu offenbaren. Er gibt ihm ein kleines Ölgemälde, das sehr wertvoll ist. Deladonchamps hilft tags darauf, den See abzusuchen, die Leiche des Vaters zu finden und Paris. Der junge Angestellte Pierre Deladonchamps (Mathieu Capelier) wird von Gabriel erkennt bald, daß die Brüder Pierre-Ives Cardinal (Sam) und Patrick Hivon (Ben) mißgünstig sind; am Abend darauf schlägt ihn Cardinal, als er Arcands Tochter Catherine De Léan  (Bettina) abends gegen die Anwürfe von Cardinal verteidigt. De Léan  kommt ihm näher; doch am nächsten Tag muss er zurückreisen und verzichtet auf Teilnahme an der „Beerdigung“. Ihm dämmert, daß Arcand sein Vater ist…

Ein sehr sorgfältig und mit großer Präzision gemachter Film; der zwischen familiären Verhältnissen und dem Versuch einer Annäherung gelegene Atlantik ist von Symbolkraft und Ausdruck der Tatsache, daß der Autor der Vorlage ebenfalls zwischen den Welten schwebt.

Paris. The young employee Pierre Deladonchamps (Mathieu Capelier) receives a phone call from Gabriel Arcand (Pierre Lesage) in Montreal – his father has died. Deladonchamps did not know him, but makes his way there. He has two brothers there whom he doesn’t know either. Arcand picks him up, looks after him and advises him not to reveal his identity to the brothers. He gives him a small oil painting, which is very valuable. The next day, Deladonchamps helps to search the lake to find his father’s body and soon realises that the brothers Pierre-Ives Cardinal (Sam) and Patrick Hivon (Ben) are resentful; the following evening, Cardinal hits him when he defends Arcand’s daughter Catherine De Léan (Bettina) against Cardinal’s accusations. De Léan gets closer to him, but the next day he has to travel back and decides not to attend the ‘funeral’. It dawns on him that Arcand is his father…

A very carefully and precisely made film; the Atlantic Ocean between family relationships and the attempt at rapprochement is symbolic and an expression of the fact that the author of the original is also suspended between worlds.
