Die Braut, die sich nicht traut

New York City. „USA Today“ Kolumnist Richard Gere (Howard Eisenhower Graham) hört in einer Bar von Julia Roberts (Maggie Carpenter), die vor dem Altar drei Männern weggelaufen ist und schreibt auf dieser Grundlage eine Kolumne über sie. Sie lebt in der kleinen Stadt Hale in Maryland und beschwert sich bei der Zeitung, die Gere entlässt. Gere reist nach Hale. Dort sucht er nach der Wahrheit, klappert Roberts Bekannte ab und lernt sie kennen. Sie ist inzwischen mit dem Sportler Christopher Meloni (Bob Kelly) verlobt und alle sind gespannt, ob sie durchhält. Gere setzt sich für sie ein, doch sie nimmt das krumm. Gere kehrt nach New York zurück. Roberts flieht erneut vor dem Altar. Doch nun folgt sie Gere nach New York und heiratet ihn.

Keine amerikanische Zeitung würde eine Geschichte wie die Geres auf dieser Grundlage bringen. Übersehen wir das – aber was treibt Gere nun Roberts in die Arme? Und umgekehrt? Mehr als der Charme der Darsteller gibt es nicht als Erklärung – jedenfalls nicht die anekdotenhafte, überlange Geschichte seiner Nachforschungen. Gere lächelt immer gleich – und Roberts, facettenreicher, muß den Rest bis zum vorhersehbaren Ende tragen.

New York City. „USA Today“ columnist Richard Gere (Howard Eisenhower Graham) hears in a bar about Julia Roberts (Maggie Carpenter) running away from three men at the altar and writes a column about her on that basis. She lives in the small town of Hale, Maryland, and complains to the newspaper, which fires Gere. Gere travels to Hale. There he searches for the truth, rattles off Robert’s acquaintances and gets to know her. She is now engaged to the athlete Christopher Meloni (Bob Kelly) and everyone is anxious to see if she will stick it out. Gere stands up for her, but she takes it badly. Gere returns to New York. Roberts flees the altar again. But now she follows Gere to New York and marries him.

No American newspaper would run a story like Gere’s on that basis. Let’s overlook that – but what now drives Gere into Roberts‘ arms? And vice versa? There is nothing more than the charm of the actors to explain it – at least not the anecdotal, overlong story of his investigations. Gere always smiles the same – and Roberts, more multi-faceted, has to carry the rest until the predictable end.
