Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome

Der entflohene Sträfling Boris Karloff (Gruesome) sucht mit Tony Barrett (‚Melody‘ Fisk), seinem alten Komplizen,  Edward Ashley (Doctor L.E. Thal) bei Wood Plastics, Inc. auf. Dort öffnet er neugierig ein Fläschchen mit einem Erstickungsgas, flüchtet und wird wenig später für tot gehalten. Er erwacht und flieht aus der Leichenhalle. Er sichert sich einen hohen Anteil; kurz darauf wird das Gas in der National Bank aktiviert. Alle Anwesenden außer Anne Gwynn (Tess Trueheart), der Freundin von Polizeidetektiv Ralph Byrd (Dick Tracy), werden spontan gelähmt. Karloff und Barrett erbeuten 100.000 Dollar. Gwynn kann Byrd anrufen. Der überzeugt sich und hört, daß Milton Parsons (Dr. A Tomic) verschwunden ist, von dem Ashley die Chemikalie gestohlen hatte. Barrett  wird verletzt gefasst. Im Krankenhaus sollen Zeugen ihn identifizieren. Barrett stirbt. Byrd lockt Karloff ins Krankenhaus. Als der Barrett ans Leben will, entdeckt er Byrd unter den Bandagen. Nach einem heftigen Kampf kann der Karloff erschießen.

Die Handlung ist belanglos, und Tracy als Charakter nicht vorhanden. Aber die Gesichter von Karloff und seinen Komplizen sind die Stars, und die Namen der Handelnden verweisen auf ihre Eigenschaften, dem Comic-Ursprung der Serie gerecht. Der Banküberfall ist szenisch das Beste.

Escaped convict Boris Karloff (Gruesome) visits Edward Ashley (Doctor L.E. Thal) at Wood Plastics, Inc. with Tony Barrett (‘Melody’ Fisk), his old accomplice. There he curiously opens a vial of suffocating gas, escapes and is soon presumed dead. He wakes up and escapes from the morgue. He secures a large share; shortly afterwards, the gas is activated in the National Bank. Everyone present except Anne Gwynn (Tess Trueheart), the girlfriend of police detective Ralph Byrd (Dick Tracy), is spontaneously paralysed. Karloff and Barrett steal 100,000 dollars. Gwynn is able to call Byrd. He convinces himself and hears that Milton Parsons (Dr A Tomic), from whom Ashley had stolen the chemical, has disappeared. Barrett is caught injured. Witnesses are asked to identify him at the hospital. Barrett dies. Byrd lures Karloff to the hospital. When he tries to save Barrett’s life, he discovers Byrd under the bandages. After a fierce fight, Karloff is able to shoot him.

The plot is inconsequential and Tracy as a character is non-existent. But the faces of Karloff and his accomplices are the stars, and the names of the actors refer to their characteristics, in keeping with the comic origins of the series. The bank robbery is the best scene.
