Der wunderbare Mr. Rogers

Pittsburgh 1998. Der beliebte Jugendfernseh-Moderator Tom Hanks (Fred Rogers) stellt in seiner Sendung Freunde vor, inbesondere den Journalisten Matthew Ryss (Lloyd Vogel). Der geht mit seiner Frau Susan Kelechi Watson (Andrea Vogel) zur neuerlichen Hochzeit seiner Schwester Tammy Blanchard (Lorraine), wo er sich mit seinem gehassten Vater Chris Cooper (Jerry Vogel) prügelt, den er Ewigkeiten nicht gesehen hat.  Ryss erhält von „Esquire“ den Auftrag, 400 Worte in einer Präsentation von ‚Helden‘ über Hanks zu schreiben. In Pittsburgh hat Hanks beim Dreh wenig Zeit und redet überwiegend über Ryss. Dennoch ist Ryss beeindruckt. Kurz darauf meldet sich Hanks in New York; wieder erfährt Ryss wenig und muß über seine Probleme erzählen. Er bricht ab. Zuhause findet er Cooper vor, der mit Watson spricht. Er erinnert ihn lautstark, wie er damals seine Frau auf dem Totenbett allein gelassen hat. Cooper erleidet einen Herzanfall. Ryss bleibt nicht an seinem Krankenbett in der Klinik, sondern fährt wieder nach Pittsburgh. Dort bringt Hanks den erschöpften Ryss zum Denken. Er versöhnt sich mit seinem Vater; auch Hanks kommt zum Krankenbett. Bei ‚Esquire‘ wird Ryss‘ Artikel zur Titelgeschichte. Cooper stirbt. Hanks zeigt im Fernsehen ein versöhnliches Familienphoto von Ryss.

Ein zwiespältiger Film und kein reiner Wohlfühlfilm. Rogers, in der USA eine Ikone für eine Fernsehgeneration Kinder, wird gezeigt als ein Mann, der seine Freundlichkeit und Zuwendung, ein Show-Attribut für die Öffentlichkeit, auch für sein privates Dasein anwandte und sich ohne Zweifel dabei verbog. Die Frage des Journalisten, ob seine Attitüde nicht eine große Belastung für ihn sei, hat er nicht beantwortet. Worüber man sprechen kann, das kann man bewältigen, war seine Weisheit. Tom Hanks, dem Vernehmen nach mit Rogers entfernt verwandt, hatte die Belastung, mit einer fast maskenhaften Freundlichkeitsmimik agieren zu müssen.

Pittsburgh 1998. Popular youth TV host Tom Hanks (Fred Rogers) introduces friends on his show, in particular journalist Matthew Ryss (Lloyd Vogel). The latter goes with his wife Susan Kelechi Watson (Andrea Vogel) to the recent wedding of his sister Tammy Blanchard (Lorraine), where he gets into a fight with his hated father Chris Cooper (Jerry Vogel), whom he hasn’t seen for ages.  Ryss is commissioned by „Esquire“ to write 400 words in a presentation of ‚Heroes‘ about Hanks. In Pittsburgh, Hanks has little time during the shoot and talks mostly about Ryss. Nevertheless, Ryss is impressed. Shortly afterwards Hanks reports to New York; again Ryss learns little and has to recount his problems. He breaks off. At home, he finds Cooper talking to Watson. He reminds him aloud of the time he left his wife alone on her deathbed. Cooper suffers a heart attack. Ryss does not stay at his bedside in the hospital, but drives back to Pittsburgh. There Hanks makes the exhausted Ryss think. He reconciles with his father; Hanks also comes to the hospital bed. At ‚Esquire‘ Ryss‘ article becomes the cover story. Cooper dies. Hanks shows a reconciliatory family photo of Ryss on TV.

A conflicted film and not a pure feel-good movie. Rogers, an icon in the US for a generation of children watching television, is shown as a man who applied his kindness and attention, a show attribute for the public, to his private existence as well, and no doubt bent in the process. He did not answer the journalist’s question whether his attitude was not a great burden for him. What you can talk about, you can handle, was his wisdom. Tom Hanks, by all accounts distantly related to Rogers, had the burden of having to act with an almost mask-like facial expression of friendliness.
