The little (Niccolo Paganini) does little to impress his father, who teaches him, on the violin. The great David Garrett (Niccolo Paganini) makes little impression on his audience at performances. But once, in 1830, the soignée Jared Harris (Urbani) approaches him. He wants to serve him after a pact between the two and lay the music world at his feet. This succeeds, but Garrett gambles away the money… It is a good thing that the London opera house needs a star and the impresario Christian McKay (John Watson) is determined to bring Garrett to London on his own account. There he meets demonstrations of the „Ladies‘ League of Virtue“, who take offence at Garrett’s consumption of women. Garrett now lives with McKay instead of at the hotel and takes a liking to McKay’s daughter Andrea Deck (Charlotte Watson), who trains her singing voice and is passed off as a ‚maid‘. Because of high prices, advance sales for the concert go badly. This is where the Times journalist Joely Richardson (Ethel Langham), who seduces Garrett, a command performance for the king, which Garrett turns down, and other demonstrations come in handy. At the big concert, the audience goes wild, and Garrett also has Deck perform, who is starting her career but is also considered Garrett’s sweetheart. She had originally rejected him, but the music had worked. Harris sees to it that the affair ends. Garrett engages himself in a casino in Paris and dismisses Harris. Harris prophesies that he will never be able to live without him. Garrett’s illnesses increase. He dies in 1840.

In the legend, Paganini is the Cagliostro of music. The film knits together this legend and is not to be taken biographically or historically. Bernard Rose, also cinematographer, performs a tale of the romantic period, and has gathered a suitable ensemble of actors around him and well-composed scenery to go with it. It is well-crafted, holding suspense for over two hours and inviting many interpretations. Only with Garrett  a compromise is necessary. His violin art was more important than the modest acting – and that he is not suited to romance in the personality he embodies.
