Argentinien 1976. Der englische Lehrer Steve Coogan (Tom Michell) nimmt eine Stelle an einer Privatschule an. Ein Militärputsch trübt die Stimmung. Menschen verschwinden. Bei einem Kurzurlaub in Uruguay rettet Coogan am Strand von Punta del Este einen Pinguin vor einem Ölteppich. Das Tier ist anhänglich. Er muß es nach Argentinien mitnehmen. Dort kann er den Pinguin auf Dauer nicht verstecken. Der hat einen positiven Einfluß: Bisher randalierende Schüler werden aufmerksame Zuhörer. Der Pinguin wird inoffiziell bleiben…

„Nach einer wahren Begebenheit.“ Diese Entschuldigung steht auch im Vorspann dieses Films, der es weidlich auszuschlachten versucht, daß einem Mann ein Pinguin zuläuft. Und weil das Vorbild lebt, traut man sich nicht, das ganze dramaturgisch aufzubessern. Der Pinguin ist nett, aber der Film öde.

Argentina, 1976. English teacher Steve Coogan (Tom Michell) takes a job at a private school. A military coup casts a shadow over the mood. People are disappearing. During a short holiday in Uruguay, Coogan rescues a penguin from an oil slick on the beach at Punta del Este. The animal is affectionate. He has to take it back to Argentina with him. He cannot hide the penguin there permanently. It has a positive influence: pupils who were previously rowdy become attentive listeners. The penguin will stay unofficially…

‘Based on a true story.’ This excuse also appears in the opening credits of this film, which tries to exploit the fact that a penguin runs up to a man. And because the model is alive, they don’t dare to improve the drama. The penguin is cute, but the film is boring.
