Der letzte Akkord

München 1956. June Allyson (Helen Banning) aus Philadelphia tritt bei ihrem ersten Auslandsaufenthalt – außer Montreal – eine Stelle am Amerikahaus an. Der Familienfreund, der Kardiologe Keith Andres (Dr. Morley Dwyer) umwirbt sie. Sie aber rasselt durch Zufall mit den berühmten Dirigenten Rossano Brazzi (Tonio Fischer) zusammen, den sie zur Widergutmachung im Schloß von Francoise Rosay (Gräfin Reinhart) gutzustimmen sucht. Das gelingt freilich erst nach seinem Konzert mit einem Ausflug nach Salzburg. Doch dann findet Allyson heraus, daß Brazzi mit der schwermütigen und verwirrten Marianne Koch (Reni) verheiratet ist. Die wiederum wird zwar von Brazzi umsorgt, hat aber Angst, ihn zu verlieren und will sich in den Starnberger See stürzen, wovor Allyson sie bewahrt. Allyson gibt Brazzi auf und geht mit Andres zurück nach Amerika.

An der Oberfläche eine Schmonzette. Darunter aber eine Darstellung des scheinbar perfekt in USA angepassten Sirk, daß die USA und das alte Europa miteinander nicht können. Allyson aus dem eher sophistischen Philadelphia staunt zwar ob der Wunder der Städte, Landschaften und der Musik, aber zeigt außer der Emotion gegenüber Brazzi kein tieferes Interesse und passt – leider – wirklich besser zu dem farblosen Arzt, der ihr seine Mittelmäßigkeit auch noch als verlockend schildert. Koch hat eine für sie völlig atypische Rolle, die sie bravourös meistert – mit einer Szene, in der sie wie König Ludwig ins Wasser geht….

Munich 1956. June Allyson (Helen Banning) from Philadelphia takes up a position at the Amerikahaus on her first stay abroad – apart from Montreal. Family friend, cardiologist Keith Andres (Dr. Morley Dwyer) courts her. But by chance she clashes with the famous conductor Rossano Brazzi (Tonio Fischer), whom she tries to make up to him at the castle of Francoise Rosay (Countess Reinhart). Of course, this only succeeds after his concert with a trip to Salzburg. But then Allyson finds out that Brazzi is married to the melancholic and confused Marianne Koch (Reni). She, in turn, is cared for by Brazzi, but is afraid of losing him and wants to throw herself into Lake Starnberg, which Allyson saves her from. Allyson gives up Brazzi and goes back to America with Andres.

On the surface, a schmonzette. Underneath, however, a portrayal by Sirk, seemingly perfectly adjusted in USA, that the USA and old Europe can’t do with each other. Allyson, from the more sophistical Philadelphia, marvels at the wonders of the cities, landscapes and music, but shows no deeper interest other than emotion towards Brazzi and is – unfortunately – really better suited to the colorless doctor, who also portrays his mediocrity as enticing to her. Koch has a role that is completely atypical for her, which she masters brilliantly – with a scene in which she goes into the water like King Ludwig….
