Der große Ziegfeld

Chicago 1893: Auf der Weltausstellung dreht der Schausteller William Powell (Florenz Ziegfeld jr.) den Spieß um und stiehlt seinem erfolgreicheren Nachbarn Frank Morgan (Billings) nicht nur die Show, sondern auch dessen Freundin. Dies wiederholt sich im weiteren Verlaufe ihres Lebens, während Ziegfeld mit immer größeren und spektakuläreren Shows ein Vermögen macht und wieder verliert. Die französische Revuestar Luise Rainer (Anna Held) wird seine erste Frau, aber sie lässt sich wegen dem Revuegirl Virginia Bruce (Audrey Dane) scheiden.  Später heiratet Powell Myrna Loy (Billie Burke) und erfährt ein spätes Glück… Doch seine finanziellen Sorgen hören nie auf aber…

Etwas gedehnte Lebensgeschichte, deren Weisheit darin besteht, daß die grössten Shows die Besten sind – wie es sich für das grösste Studio, MGM, gehört. Dadurch etwas behäbig. 1936 Preis der amerikanischen Filmakademie als „Bester Film“ .

Chicago, 1893: At the World’s Fair, showman William Powell (Florenz Ziegfeld Jr.) turns the tables and steals not only the show from his more successful neighbour Frank Morgan (Billings), but also his girlfriend. This pattern repeats itself throughout their lives, as Ziegfeld makes and loses a fortune with ever larger and more spectacular shows. French revue star Luise Rainer (Anna Held) becomes his first wife, but she divorces him because of the revue girl Virginia Bruce (Audrey Dane). Later, Powell marries Myrna Loy (Billie Burke) and finds late happiness… But his financial worries never end, but…

A somewhat drawn-out life story, whose wisdom lies in the fact that the biggest shows are the best – as befits the biggest studio, MGM. This makes it somewhat sedate. 1936 Academy Award for Best Picture.
