Der dreizehnte Gast

Tampa, Florida. Taucher Ray Milland (Clay Douglas) hat sich die Summe ertaucht, mit der er eine Europareise finanzieren kann. Er reist nach England, wo er die Umstände aufklären will, die zum Tode seines Bruder führten, der auf britischer Seite im 2. Weltkrieg kämpfte. Er versucht, Zeugen zu befragen, die dabei gewesen sein müssten. Doch niemand will davon etwas wissen. Patricia Rock (Elspeth Graham), die er kennenlernt, als er Hugh Sinclair (Hamish Mc Arran) befragen will, wird seine Gefährtin. Endlich führt Naunton Wayne (Reggie Sinclair) ihn auf die Spur: Sinclair hat den Bruder erschossen. Doch als Milland Rache üben will, erklärt Wane: das exaltierte Verhalten des Bruders habe die ganze Gruppe gefährdet – so gab es keine Wahl.

Mit dem Zuschauer tastet sich Tourneur langsam an die Lösung heran – und der Weg ist das Ziel. Aus dem Nichts, das die Zeugen vorgaukeln, entwickelt sich das Ergebnis, das freilich nach kurzer Dramatik wieder verebbt. Wenig bekannt, aber lohnend.

Tampa, Florida. Diver Ray Milland (Clay Douglas) has earned enough money to finance a trip to Europe. He travels to England, where he wants to clarify the circumstances that led to the death of his brother, who fought on the British side in World War II. He tries to interview witnesses who must have been there. But no one wants to know anything about it. Patricia Rock (Elspeth Graham), whom he meets when he tries to question Hugh Sinclair (Hamish Mc Arran), becomes his companion. Finally, Naunton Wayne (Reggie Sinclair) puts him on the right track: Sinclair shot his brother. But when Milland wants to take revenge, Wane explains that his brother’s eccentric behaviour had endangered the whole group – so there was no choice.

Tourneur slowly feels his way towards the solution with the viewer – and the journey is the destination. Out of the nothingness that the witnesses pretend to see, the result develops, which, of course, ebbs away again after a brief moment of drama. Little known, but worthwhile.
