Das Phantom

1536. Der kleine Austin Peters verliert bei einem Piratenüberfall der Sengh seinen Vater. Er selbst überlebt im Bengalla Dschungel und wird zum „wandelnden Geist“, der das Böse bekämpft. Bengalla 1939. Der Amerikaner James Remar (Quill), ebenfalls zur Sengh gehörig, stiehlt aus einer Höhle den ‚Schädel von Togawa‘. Es gibt, an unbekannten Orten, weitere zwei davon, die zusammengebracht ungeheure Kräfte haben. New York. Kristy Swanson (Diana Palmer), Nichte des Zeitungsverlegers der ‚World Tribune‘, Bill Smitrovich (Dave Palmer), greift den Vorgang auf. Auf dem Pan-Am Flug an den Ort des Geschehens wird sie von der Piratin Catherine Zeta Jones (Lara) entführt. Billy Zane (das Phantom) befreit sie. Remar und Zeta Jones arbeiten für den New Yorker Industriemagnaten Treat Williams (Xander Drax), der die USA beherrschen möchte. Zane (nunmehr Kit Walker) besucht New York – er kennt Swanson vom College. Er wird Zeuge, wie Williams den zweiten Schädel aus dem ‚Museum of World History‘ stiehlt. Zwei Schädel weisen den Weg zum Dritten. Williams entführt Swanson erneut und fliegt mit seinen Leuten zum Teufelsdreieck. Zane ist blinder Passagier auf den Schwimmwerk. Williams erlangt am Ziel im Kampf mit dem Piraten Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Kabai Sengh) den dritten Schädel. Doch die Macht der Schädel wird kontrolliert von einem vierten Schädel: den am Ring Zanes. Zeta Jones wechselt auf Zanes Seite. Williams und Tagawa werden getötet. Swanson bleibt nicht in Bengalla – aber Zane weiß, daß sie zurückkehren wird.

Der Charme der Phantom-Geschichten, die es seit 1936 gibt, besteht darin, daß ihre rationale Erklärung (20 Phantome in direkter Abstammung kämpfen seit 1536 gegen das Böse) noch unglaubwürdiger ist als eine übernatürliche. Und so überschreitet der Film die Grenze des Rationalen in seiner Geschichte der Schädel, während er sonst in Effekten, Settings und seinen Figuren bodenständig bleibt. Von Fans der Comics gedreht, ergibt das eine sympathische Mischung für die schuldigen Freuden der Sonntagsmatinee.

In 1536, little Austin Peters loses his father in a Sengh pirate raid. He himself survives in the Bengalla jungle and becomes a „walking ghost“ who fights evil. Bengalla 1939. The American James Remar (Quill), also belonging to the Sengh, steals the ‚Skull of Togawa‘ from a cave. There are, in unknown places, another two of them, which when brought together have tremendous powers. New York. Kristy Swanson (Diana Palmer), niece of ‚World Tribune‘ newspaper publisher Bill Smitrovich (Dave Palmer), takes up the cause. On the Pan-Am flight to the scene, she is kidnapped by pirate Catherine Zeta Jones (Lara). Billy Zane (the Phantom) frees her. Remar and Zeta Jones work for New York tycoon Treat Williams (Xander Drax), who wants to rule the US. Zane (now Kit Walker) visits New York – he knows Swanson from college. He witnesses Williams stealing the second skull from the ‚Museum of World History‘. Two skulls point the way to the third. Williams kidnaps Swanson again and flies with his men to the Devil’s Triangle. Zane is a stowaway on the float. Williams obtains the third skull at the destination in a fight with the pirate Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Kabai Sengh). But the power of the skulls is controlled by a fourth skull: the one on Zane’s ring. Zeta Jones switches to Zane’s side. Williams and Tagawa are killed. Swanson does not stay in Bengalla – but Zane knows she will return.

The charm of phantom stories, which have been around since 1936, is that their rational explanation (20 phantoms in direct lineage have been fighting evil since 1536) is even more implausible than a supernatural one. And so the film crosses the line of the rational in its story of the skulls, while otherwise remaining down-to-earth in effects, settings and its characters. Shot by fans of the comics, this makes for a sympathetic mix for the guilty pleasures of the Sunday matinee.
