Das Grab der Mumie

Mapleton, Massachusetts. Archäologe Dick Foran (Stephen A. Banning) erzählt seiner Familie von einer Grabungsreise nach Ägypten vor dreißig Jahren. Damals entdeckte Foran ein Grab mit der 3.000 Jahre alte Mumie Lon Chaney jr. (Kharis). Die will ihre Entweihung rächen, doch wird sie von Foran verbrannt – in Wahrheit nur verstümmelt. Sie kommt jetzt nach Amerika, um Rache an Grabschändern und ihren Familien zu nehmen. Foran ist das erste Opfer. Weitere folgen. Die Sache wird zeitungsnotorisch und erregt Aufsehen. Die Mumie wird als Ursache akzeptiert und schließlich von einem Mob der Stadtbewohner ins Feuer geschickt.

Eine Reminiszenz. „Die Mumie“ von Karl Freund war stark und kosmopolitisch – diese Mumie treibt es rasch in ein kleines Universal-Städtchen zur kleinkarierten Rache. Immerhin gut photographiert. In seinem Ende an „Frankenstein“ 1931 gemahnend. Spielt etwa 1913 in Ägypten – und damit vor den populären Reisen, die den Mumien-Boom brachten.

Mapleton, Massachusetts. Archaeologist Dick Foran (Stephen A. Banning) tells his family about an excavation trip to Egypt thirty years ago. Back then, Foran discovered a tomb containing the 3,000-year-old mummy of Lon Chaney Jr. (Kharis). The mummy seeks revenge for the desecration of its tomb, but is burnt by Foran – though in reality it is merely mutilated. It now comes to America to take revenge on the grave robbers and their families. Foran is the first victim. Others follow. The case makes the headlines and causes a stir. The mummy is accepted as the cause and is eventually set alight by a mob of townspeople.

A throwback. Karl Freund’s „The Mummy“ was powerful and cosmopolitan – this mummy, however, quickly finds itself in a small Universal town, seeking petty revenge. At least it’s well photographed. Its ending is reminiscent of „Frankenstein“ (1931). Set in Egypt around 1913 – and thus before the popular travel trends that sparked the mummy boom.
