Das Böse unter der Sonne

London 1938. Eine Versicherung bittet Detektiv Peter Ustinov (Hercule Poirot), aufzuklären, warum Millionär Colin Blakely (Sir Horace Blatt) ein Diamantenimitat für 50.000 Pfund versichern will. Dessen Ex-Geliebte Diana Rigg (Arlena Marshall) hatte das Imitat statt des Originals zurückgegeben. Blakely schickt Ustinov auf eine Insel in der Adria, um das Original zu retten, wo Rigg im Hotel von ihrer alten Freundin Maggie Smith (Daphne Castle) erwartet wird. Einige andere ihrer Bekannten wohnen ebenso da wie nun Ustinov; eines Tages wird Rigg am Strand erwürgt gefunden. Ustinov ermittelt ohne Polizei – alle Gäste haben ein Alibi. Die Verwirrung steigt. Doch dann liegt die Täterschaft bei einem jungen Paar – und Ustinov löst nebenbei noch einen bisher ungeklärten Mordfall aus Yorkshire.

Obwohl es lange dauert, bis der zu erwartende Mord geschieht, und obwohl der voyeuristisch orientierte Film keine Sympathien an seine Figuren verschwendet, hat der Zuschauer keine Chance, es Poirot gleichzutun: hochkonstruiert die Lösung, selektiv der Einblick in das Geschehen. Optisch opulent, gut besetzt – und Geduld fordernd. Cole Porter, dessen Musik hier dazu dient, alles nicht so ernst zu nehmen, ist auch im Gästebuch eingetragen.

In 1938 London, an insurance company asks detective Peter Ustinov (Hercule Poirot) to find out why millionaire Colin Blakely (Sir Horace Blatt) wants to insure an imitation diamond for 50,000 pounds. His ex-lover Diana Rigg (Arlena Marshall) had returned the imitation instead of the original. Blakely sends Ustinov to an island in the Adriatic to rescue the original, where Rigg is expected at the hotel by her old friend Maggie Smith (Daphne Castle). Some of her other acquaintances are also staying there, as is Ustinov now; one day Rigg is found strangled on the beach. Ustinov investigates without the police – all the guests have an alibi. The confusion grows. But then the culprit is a young couple – and Ustinov also solves a previously unsolved murder case from Yorkshire.

Although it takes a long time for the expected murder to take place, and although the voyeuristically oriented film wastes no sympathy on its characters, the viewer has no chance to do the same as Poirot: the solution is highly contrived, the insight into the events selective. Visually opulent, well cast – and demanding patience. Cole Porter, whose music is used here to take everything less seriously, is also signed in the guest book.
