Frankfurt 2019. Die junge Marokkanerin Nilam Farooq (Naima Hamid) kommt zu spät in die Vorlesung des Professors Christoph Maria Herbst (Richard Pohl) an der Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universität. Herbst stellt sie öffentlich zur Rede, zeigt Verachtung für ihre Herkunft. Handys filmen, und Herbst muss vor den Disziplinarausschuss. Rektor Ernst Stötzner (Dr. Alexander Lambrecht) schlägt ihm vor, Farooq persönlich für den bundesweiten Rethorik-Wettbewerb zu coachen. Farooq und Herbst finden widerwillig dazu zusammen. Doch widerwillig lernt sie von ihm und Schopenhauer und seiner eristischen Dialektik. Privat hilft ihr das, dem arabischen Taxifahrer Hassan Akouch (Mo) näher zu kommen. Im Wettbewerb stellt sich ihr Erfolg nach und nach ein. Sie kommt ins Finale, und als das vorab gefeiert wird, verrät ihr der Co-Student Stefan Gorski (Benjamin)  den wahren Grund, warum Herbst sich um sie kümmert. Schockiert boykottiert Farooq das Finale. Akouch muss sie ermutigen, weiterzukämpfen, und so tritt sie vor dem Disziplinarausschuss für Herbst auf. Die beiden versöhnen sich in Gegnerschaft.

Eine französische Geschichte wird in der Nachfilmung nicht automatisch eine deutsche Geschichte, auch wenn die Stoffe von dort im Ausland gerne benutzt werden. Die arabische Gesellschaftsschicht ist in Paris ein ständiges Thema – hierzulande gibt es andere. So bekam Wörtmann seine Marokkanerin nicht in den Griff; das Ganze wirkt aufgesetzt. Zudem ist die universitäre Kultur in Deutschland wider die Schlüsselszene zu Beginn. Das hindert nicht, daß Farooq und Herbst gute Leistungen liefern

Frankfurt 2019. The young Moroccan woman Nilam Farooq (Naima Hamid) is late for the lecture of professor Christoph Maria Herbst (Richard Pohl) at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University. Herbst publicly confronts her, showing contempt for her origins. Mobile phones film, and Herbst has to go before the disciplinary committee. Rector Ernst Stötzner (Dr Alexander Lambrecht) suggests that he personally coach Farooq for the nationwide rhetoric competition. Farooq and Herbst reluctantly agree. But reluctantly she learns from him and Schopenhauer and his eristic dialectics. Privately, this helps her get closer to the Arab taxi driver Hassan Akouch (Mo). In the competition, her success gradually sets in. She makes it to the final, and when this is celebrated in advance, co-student Stefan Gorski (Benjamin) reveals to her the real reason why Herbst cares about her. Shocked, Farooq boycotts the final. Akouch has to encourage her to fight on, so she appears before the disciplinary committee on Herbst’s behalf. The two reconcile in antagonism.

A French story does not automatically become a German story in the re-filming, even if the material from there is readily used abroad. The Arab social class is a constant theme in Paris – in this country there are others. So Wörtmann couldn’t get a grip on his Moroccan; the whole thing seems contrived. Moreover, the university culture in Germany is against the key scene at the beginning. This does not prevent Farooq and Herbst from delivering good performances.
