London, Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. Francesca Hayward (Victoria), eine junge weiße Katze, wird nachts ausgesetzt. Die Katzen, die dies miterleben, stellen sich ihr als „Jellicles“ vor. Sie zeigen ihr die Welt der Jellicles und preisen den Jellicle-Ball, bei der die Katzen jährlich darum wetteifern, in die Heaviside-Sphäre zu kommen und ein neues Leben zu bekommen. Nun werden die Katzen mit ihren Rollen präsentiert- darunter Idris Elba (Macavity), ein Schurke mit magischen Kräften, der andere Kandidaten ausschaltet, um beim Ball zur Jellicle Choice gewählt zu werden. Die Wahl trifft die weise und geliebte Judy Dench (Old Deuteronomy). Der Jellicle-Ball beginnt im verlassenen Theater „The Egyptian“. Elba trifft ein und verlangt, gewählt zu werden. Dench hält ihn für unwürdig und lehnt ab. Elba entführt sie auf ein Themse Boot, wohin er auch andere Kandidaten verschleppt hat. Hayward bringt den Schmalspur-Magier Laurie Davidson (Mr. Mistoffelees) dazu, über sich hinauszuwachsen und Dench wieder erscheinen zu lassen. Ferner macht Hayward Dench auf die alte kranke Ex-Glamourkatze Jennifer Hudson (Grizabella) aufmerksam. Denchs Wahl fällt nun auf Hudson, die mit einem Ballon in der Heaviside Sphäre entschwindet. Hayward wird nun als Jellicle-Katze akzeptiert.

Die Verfilmung des einzigen Musical-Genie-Streichs von Andrew Lloyd Webber (mit heftiger Unterstützung durch T.S. Eliot) ist besser als ihr Ruf. Eine opulente optische Ausstattung, eine pittoreske Katzen-Gegenwelt und gute Besetzung tragen die Show, die wenig Handlung, aber einiges an Originalität aufzuweisen hat, über ihre Laufzeit.

London, early 20th century. Francesca Hayward (Victoria), a young white cat, is abandoned at night. The cats who witness this introduce themselves to her as „Jellicles“. They show her the world of the Jellicles and praise the Jellicle Ball, where cats compete every year to get into the Heaviside sphere and get a new life. Now the cats are presented with their roles – including Idris Elba (Macavity), a rogue with magical powers who eliminates other candidates to be voted Jellicle Choice at the ball. The choice is made by the wise and beloved Judy Dench (Old Deuteronomy). The Jellicle Ball begins in the abandoned theatre „The Egyptian“. Elba arrives and demands to be chosen. Dench considers him unworthy and refuses. Elba abducts them to a Thames Boat, where he has also abducted other candidates. Hayward gets the narrow-minded magician Laurie Davidson (Mr. Mistoffelees) to rise above himself and make Dench appear again. Furthermore Hayward draws Dench’s attention to the old sick ex-glamour cat Jennifer Hudson (Grizabella). Dench now chooses Hudson, who disappears with a balloon in the Heaviside sphere. Hayward is now accepted as Jellicle cat.

The filming of the only musical genius prank by Andrew Lloyd Webber (with fierce support from T.S. Eliot) is better than its reputation. Opulent visuals, a picturesque feline alternative world and good cast carry the show, which has little plot but some originality, through its running time.
