Call Me By Your Name

Lombardei, Italien, Sommer 1983. Der jüdische Professor Michael Stuhlbarg (Perlman) und Frau Amira Casar (Annella Perlman) empfangen im Landhaus ihren Sommergast, den postdoktoralen jungen Amerikaner Armie Hammer (Oliver), der seine Arbeit über Heraklit korrigieren will. Für ihn muß ihr Sohn Timothée Chalamet (Elio Perlman) sein Zimmer räumen – aber der Gast fasziniert ihn. Die sexuelle Komponente wird stärker, auch wenn Chalamet, der komponiert, mit Esther Garell (Marcia) herumtändelt. Als er seine Liebe bekennt, ist Hammer zunächst zurückhaltend, dann fängt auch er Feuer. Bei seiner Abreise nach 6 Wochen ermutigen die Eltern Chalamet, Hammer bis Clusone zu begleiten, wo die beiden ein paar Tage miteinander verbringen.  Nach Monaten ruft Hammer an, um zu berichten, daß er bald heirate.

Viele Attraktionen hat der Film: Er arbeitet mit frischen, nicht abgegriffenen Bildern, er meidet Prätention, er hat in dem jungen Elio einen sympathisch konturierten Protagonisten in einem kulturell gemischt dominierten Biotop und er hat eine humanistische Botschaft. Normalerweise reicht das. Doch wenn die Beziehung der beiden Männer sich vertieft, dann vertieft sich, daß der Gast aus USA kaum Persönlichkeit besitzt, für uns glatt wirkt, und wir uns Sex, aber kaum mehr erklären können. Erst im letzten Drittel des Films spürbar.

Lombardy, Italy, summer 1983: The Jewish professor Michael Stuhlbarg (Perlman) and his wife Amira Casar (Annella Perlman) receive their summer guest, the post-doctoral young American Armie Hammer (Oliver), who wants to correct his work on Heraclitus, in the country house. Her son Timothée Chalamet (Elio Perlman) has to vacate his room for him – but the guest fascinates him. The sexual component becomes stronger, even though Chalamet, who is composing, is trifling with Esther Garell (Marcia). When he confesses his love, Hammer is initially reserved, then he too catches fire. When he leaves after 6 weeks, his parents encourage Chalamet to accompany Hammer to Clusone, where they spend a few days together.  After months Hammer calls to report that he is about to marry.

The film has many attractions: it works with fresh, unspoilt images, it avoids pretension, it has in the young Elio a sympathetically contoured protagonist in a culturally mixed biotope and it has a humanistic message. Normally that is enough. But as the relationship between the two men deepens, it becomes more profound that the guest from the USA has hardly any personality, seems smooth to us, and we can explain sex, but hardly any more. Only noticeable in the last third of the movie.
