Wien.

Vienna. Willi Forst (Ferdl) robs the handbag of a young lady in the street and meets Marlene Dietrich (Erni Göttlinger) in a café, the daughter of the philandering building contractor Fritz Alberti (Kommerzialrat Göttlinger). She falls for him and gives him her telephone number. Afterwards Forst pressures his ex-girlfriend Nina Vanna (Hansi) for money in the contact café „Electric“, and when he takes Dietrich to his place the same evening, he also asks her for 500 schillings. In the meantime, Vanna has met the engineer Igo Sym (Max Stöger), who works for Dietrich’s father, has gone to the cinema with him in honour at „Rin Tin Tin“, and hopes to see him again at the Café Elektric. Sym witnesses Dietrich stealing money and a ring from Alberti’s company coffers for Forst. Forst is recognised by the robbed woman in the café and flees. The easy girl Vera Sabotti (Paula) holds her harmless and hopes to win Forst back, but recognises Dietrich as her rival. When Sym is sitting with Vanna in the Café Electric, Alberti also appears with his business friend Albert Kersten (Herr Zerner), presses Vanna, clashes with Sym, recognises the ring Forst had given Vanna and Forst as his daughter’s lover. Alberti throws Dietrich out of the house. Sym takes Vanna to live with him and marries her. Later he is unemployed; Vanna tries to get money from her fatherly friend Wilhelm Völcker (Dr. Lehner), which Sym misunderstands. Not preserved ending: Sym and Vanna get back together. Silent film.

The film’s rather unselfconscious treatment of the demimonde was chalked up to „debauchery“ at the time. But it gives this milieu a versatile interface with the bourgeoisie and does not enter any socially critical paths. It is well made – its value lies in the play of Forst, who plays expressively and with nuances almost ready for a sound film. No other character is as interesting in terms of contours. The ending is lacking today, and there is probably also missing material in Sym’s interaction with Vanna.
