Antonius und Cleopatra

Ägypten, ca. 40 vor Christus. Boten aus Rom berichten Charlton Heston (Marcus Antonius) den Tod seiner Frau. Heston war im Triumvirat Herrscher von Rom. In Rom teilt John Castle (Octavius) Fernando Rey (Lepidus) mit, dem Dritten im Triumvirat, Heston vernachlässige seine Pflichten. Die beiden bieten Freddie Jones (Sextus Pompeius) die Herrschaft über Sizilien und Sardinien an. Heston, wieder in Rom, heiratet Carmen Sevilla (Octavia). Hestons Geliebte Hildegard Neil (Cleopatra)  verfolgt das aus der Ferne. Weil ihm Rom nicht geheuer ist,  kehrt Heston zu Neil zurück. Castle erklärt Heston den Krieg. Der besteht gegen manchen Rat auf einer Seeschlacht und wird besiegt. Angesicht der Wankelmut von Neil verliert Heston auch die nächste Schlacht. Neil lässt ihn glauben, sie sei tot und er begeht Selbstmord. Castle verspricht Niles gute Behandlung, aber sie lässt sich durch einen Schlangenbiss töten.

Ein Drama von Shakespeare, das mild an einem vorüberplätschert? Gewiss wollte Charlton Heston sich hier ein Denkmal setzen, hat aber seine inszenatorischen Fähigkeiten deutlich überschätzt. Auch schauspielerisch nicht erstklassig – mit Heston in der Titelrolle.

Egypt, c. 40 BC. Messengers from Rome inform Charlton Heston (Marcus Antonius) of his wife’s death. Heston was one of the rulers of Rome as part of the Triumvirate. Back in Rome, John Castle (Octavius) tells Fernando Rey (Lepidus), the third member of the Triumvirate, that Heston is neglecting his duties. The two offer Freddie Jones (Sextus Pompey) control over Sicily and Sardinia. Heston, back in Rome, marries Carmen Sevilla (Octavia). Heston’s mistress, Hildegard Neil (Cleopatra), watches this unfold from afar. Feeling uneasy about Rome, Heston returns to Neil. Castle declares war on Heston. Against some advice, he insists on a naval battle and is defeated. Faced with Neil’s fickleness, Heston also loses the next battle. Neil leads him to believe she is dead, and he commits suicide. Castle promises to treat Neil well, but she allows herself to be killed by a snake bite.

A Shakespearean drama that gently washes over you? Charlton Heston certainly wanted to create a lasting legacy for himself here, but he clearly overestimated his directorial abilities. Nor is the acting top-class – with Heston in the title role.
