Axel Munthe – Der Arzt von San Michele

Anacapri. Der junge Arzt O.W. Fischer (Axel Munthe) verliebt sich bei einem Besuch in den Ort. Aus Paris, wo er lebt, in seine schwedische Heimat nach Vimmerby zurückgekehrt, verweigert er, dort zu praktizieren. Er kehrt nach Paris zurück und wird durch die Bekanntschaft mit Sonja Ziemann (Prinzessin Clementine) Modearzt – bis er davon hört, daß in Neapel die Cholera wüte. Er reist dorthin und stürzt sich in die Arbeit. Anschließend lebt er in Rom – und zieht sich schließlich nach Capri zurück, wo er sein Buch über San Michele schreibt und erblindet.

Bilderbogen statt Biographie – und Fischer wird stets Fischer sein und nie Axel Munthe. Aber dennoch hat der Film eine distanzierte Intensität, mit den Konstanten, daß Tiere und Tod Munthe stets begleiten. Keine andere Figur gewinnt jedoch Konturen – mit Ausnahme von Munthes Begegnung mit Eleonore Duse.

Anacapri. The young doctor O.W. Fischer (Axel Munthe) falls in love with the place during a visit. Returning from Paris, where he lives, to his Swedish home in Vimmerby, he refuses to practise there. He returns to Paris and, through his acquaintance with Sonja Ziemann (Princess Clementine), becomes a fashionable doctor – until he hears that cholera is raging in Naples. He travels there and throws himself into his work. He then lives in Rome – and finally retreats to Capri, where he writes his book about San Michele and goes blind.

A picture book instead of a biography – and Fischer will always be Fischer and never Axel Munthe. Nevertheless, the film has a detached intensity, with the constants that animals and death always accompany Munthe. However, no other character gains contours – with the exception of Munthe’s encounter with Eleonore
