13 Washington Square

New York. Alice Joyce (Mrs. De Peyster) plant eine Europareise gemeinsam mit ihrem Sohn George J. Lewis (Jack de Peyster). Sie, Patrizieradel, will ihn so von seiner Freundin Helen Foster (Mary Morgan) ablenken, der Tochter eines Gemüsehändlers, und von einer Heirat abbringen. Doch als sie Foster nicht einmal kennenlernen will, verzichtet Lewis auf die Reise und Joyce, aus Angst vor Publicity, steigt in einer Pension ab, statt zu reisen. Dort trifft sie den Bilderdieb Jean Hersholt (Pyecroft), der als Pfarrer posiert und ihre zeitungsnotorische  Reise nutzen will, das Haus auszuplündern. In 13 Washington Square treffen nun unabhängig ein: Lewis und Foster, um noch Sachen zu holen, Hersholt, um Bilder zu holen, Joyce, um der Pension und Hersholt zu entfliehen. Es folgt ein ausführliches Versteckspiel, an dessen Ende Joyce schließlich gezwungenermaßen Lewis‘ Heiratspläne billigt, nachdem zuvor das Paar den falschen Pastor um Trauung gebeten hatte. Stummfim.

Obwohl der Film als Gesellschaftsdrama des New Yorker Geldadels beginnt, steht bald das Versteckspiel im dunklen Hause im Mittelpunkt und strapaziert die Geduld – ohne rechte Spannung, denn das Ende  ist keine Überraschung.

New York. Alice Joyce (Mrs De Peyster) is planning a trip to Europe with her son George J. Lewis (Jack de Peyster). She, a patrician aristocrat, wants to distract him from his girlfriend Helen Foster (Mary Morgan), the daughter of a greengrocer, and dissuade him from marrying her. But when she doesn’t even want to meet Foster, Lewis decides not to go on the trip and Joyce, fearing publicity, stays in a boarding house instead of travelling. There she meets the picture thief Jean Hersholt (Pyecroft), who is posing as a vicar and wants to use her newspaper-notorious trip to plunder the house. At 13 Washington Square, they arrive independently: Lewis and Foster to pick up more stuff, Hersholt to pick up pictures, Joyce to escape the boarding house and Hersholt. An extensive game of hide-and-seek ensues, at the end of which Joyce is finally forced to approve Lewis‘ marriage plans, after the couple had previously asked the wrong pastor to marry them. Although the film begins as a social drama about New York’s moneyed aristocracy, the game of hide-and-seek in the dark house soon takes centre stage and tries the viewer’s patience – without any real suspense, as the ending is no surprise.
